Incorrect media reports creating wrong impression of SL – Gotabaya

It is wrong to say that crimes have increased to such an extent that people can no longer walk on the road, says Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

He stated that it is inappropriate to spread such opinions in an era when international investors are showing keen interest and greater focus has been given for the promotion of tourism.

Rajapaksa said that a certain ambassador had told him that security forces should be withdrawn from the North as rape and crimes in the province has increased. “She had said that based on media reports,” he said.

Foreign nations have a wrong impression regarding Sri Lanka due to certain incorrect information published by the media, the Defence Secretary stressed, adding that something positive to the country is expected from the media.

Armed groups in the North have now been disarmed, illegal reclaiming of land has been stopped and a programme has been launched to curtail crime, Gotabaya Rajapaksa said during a seminar on ‘Crime, Corruption and National Security’ held today (July 23) at the Information Department auditorium.

* Marxist party of Sri Lanka blames increase in crimes on failure to act on big wigs violating laws
Sat, Jul 21, 2012, 08:03 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 21, Colombo: The Marxist party of Sri Lanka, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) says the failure on the part of the authorities to take action against senior members of the government who flout the law has resulted in the increase in the country's crime rate.

JVP politburo member K.D. Lalkantha said the failure to take action against senior government ministers officials when they flout the law has encouraged junior members in the government to engage in nefarious activities.

Addressing a gathering in Kegalle, he observed that the failure to enforce the law on a group of people has created the impression among junior members of the government that they too could engage in wrong doings without having to face any consequences.

"When government ministers act against the law there's no action taken against them. It creates an impression among junior members that they too would have the same immunity from the law," Lalkantha explained.

He said that this was the reason for the large number of governing party members in local government being apprehended for various offenses, especially sexual offences.
