* South Indian companies have expressed interest as well, says chamber

With the Northern Province emerging out of the chaos of past several decades, several new businesses have already entered the Jaffna Peninsula; and more than 30 companies have registered to setup ventures in the new industrial zone with the Jaffna port expected to commence operations next January.
Yalpanam Chamber of Industry and Commerce Chairman K. Poornachandran addressing the ‘Jaffna International Trade Fair 2013’ launching ceremony said Jaffna was ready for business.
He said that the Jaffna Port was ready and was expected to commence operations beginning next year before the trade fair was to be held in January.
According to him there was much scope for the Northern Province to develop with a high cash flow circulating among the citizens.
Jaffna International Trade Fair 2013 is the fourth consecutive mega fair in Jaffna.
This year’s instalment concluded on a high note, he said, with 250 exhibitors taking part.
"Substantial deals were concluded at the fair and many individuals in the peninsula are now looking at recommencing some of their businesses which were destroyed during the 30 year civil conflict," Poornachandran said.
He said there were many individuals who were seeking dealerships and had approached the Yalpanam Chamber of Industry and Commerce, highlighting the opportunity for business expansion in the region.
According to Poornachandran, 50,000 visitors arrived for the three day exhibition this year which now has become an annual event in the region, representing domestic 7,500 businesses and 3,000 international corporates.
He said that the chamber together with the other stake holders were ready to assist businesses to enter the region to develop the economy.
"Several South Indian corporates have arranged to enter the untapped Jaffna market." Poornachandran said.
