Market took a breather towards the end of trading but not before yesterdays’ momentum continuing into the morning session. Investors seem to be booking profits whilst positive activity was seen picking up on selected counters. John Keells Holdings continued to dominate trading with Lion Breweries also making it to the limelight.

ASI gained by 10.75 points (0.21%) to close at 5,038.15, MPI dropped by points -1.17 (-0.02%) to close at 4,692.82 and the S&P index gained by points 15.80 (0.56%) to close at 2847.50. Turnover was Rs. 634.9Mn.

Top contributors to turnover were John Keells Holdings with Rs. 218.8Mn, Lion Breweries with Rs. 63.2Mn and Sampath Bank with Rs. 45.4Mn. Most active counters for the day were Browns Investments, Tess Agro and Sampath Bank.

Notable gainers for the day were Colombo Fort Investments up by 19.7% to close at Rs. 107.00, Colombo Investment Trust up by 14.7% to close at Rs. 109.00 and Hydro Power Free Lanka up by 6.9% to close at RS. 6.20. Notable losers for the day were York Arcade down by 9.6% to close at Rs. 18.80, Eastern Merchants down by 6.9% to close at Rs. 12.10 and Blue Diamonds non-voting down by 5.6% to close at Rs. 1.70.

Cash map for today was 71.81%. Foreign participation was 40.85% of total market turnover and foreigners were net buyers of Rs. 134.56Mn.

The Colombo bourse held its ground yesterday with the All Share Price Index moving up 14.48 points (0.29%), the Milanka marginally down 3.25 points (0.07%) and S&P up 15.80 points (0.56%) on a turnover of Rs.634.9 million, down from the previous day’s Rs.783 million, with 119 losers ahead of 102 gainers while 47 counters closed flat.

JKH dominated trading yesterday with three block trades aggregating nearly 0.9 million shares traded at around Rs.199 in deals worth Rs.176.1 million.

Apart from these, slightly over 0.2 million JKH was done on the floor closing flat at Rs.199 contributing Rs.42.7 million to turn over.

Other block trades included 6 million Renuka Agro done at Rs.4.20 in a deal worth Rs.25.2 million and nearly 0.2 million Central Finance at Rs.103 closing Rs.3 up generating a turnover of Rs.25.7 million.

The largest contributor to business volumes on the trading floor was Lion Brewery which gained a rupee to close at Rs.230 on nearly 0.3 million shares done between Rs.220 and Rs.230 generating a turnover of Rs.63.2 million.

Interest in Sampath Bank, evident for the past several days, continued with the counter gaining Rs.6.60 to close at Rs.178 on nearly 0.3 million shares done between Rs.172.50 and Rs.179 contributing Rs.45.2 million to turnover.

Commercial Bank too closed 20 cents up at Rs.103.50 on nearly 0.3 million shares done between Rs.103 and Rs.104 while Central Finance closed Rs.4 up at Rs.139 on 83,445 shares done between Rs.135 and Rs.145 contributing Rs.11.5 million turnover.

Brokers reported some retail interest in the market yesterday.
