Indices gain tidily: Related party mega deal in Spence drives turnover up

A block trade of over 23.1 million Aitken Spence in a deal worth Rs.2.54 billion drove turnover on the Colombo bourse yesterday to Rs.3.07 billion with all three indices too moving up – the All Share by 29.55 points (0.58%), the Milanka by 29.52 points (0.62%) and S&P by 9.91 points (0.35%) with 155 gainers strongly outpacing 61 losers while 90 counters closed flat.

Yesterday’s traction was between related parties, Distilleries Company and Melstacorp of Mr. Harry Jayawardena. The transaction was done at a price of Rs.110 at which price the counter previously traded.

On the trading floor, the most traded stocks were Colombo Land, DFCC, Citrus Leisure, Distilleries, Commercial Bank and ACL Cables with retail play evident in Colombo Land and Citrus leisure.

John Keells Stock Brokers said that ``the indices trended higher for a second consecutive day amid sharply improved activity levels which crossed the Rs. 3bn mark, due mainly to a crossing on SPEN which accounted for over 80% of total turnover."

Colombo Land saw over a million shares done between Rs.35.20 and Rs.37.80 closing Rs.2.30 up at Rs.37.40 contributing Rs.37.7 million to turnover.

DFCC Bank closed Rs.3.90 up at Rs.119 on nearly 0.3 million shares done between Rs.115.90 and Rs.119 generating a turnover of Rs.34.8 million while Citrus Leisure closed Re.1/* down at Rs.30.80 with slightly over a million shares done between Rs.30.60 and Rs.33.50 generating a turnover of Rs.33.3 million.

Distilleries closed Rs.4 up at Rs.123 on 0.2 million shares done between Rs.120 and Rs.123 contributing Rs.25.1 million to turnover and Commercial Bank (voting) closed 30 cents up at Rs.103.70 with over 0.2 million shares traded between Rs.103 and Rs.104.

ACL Cables closed Rs.2.20 up at Rs.61 on nearly 0.4 million shares done between Rs.59.30 and Rs.62.80 generating Rs.22.6 million turnover.

Maskeliya plantations announced a one for one rights issue subject to CSE and shareholder approval with approximately 27 million new shares to be issued at Rs.12 each.

Malaysia’s Parkson group which recently acquired a significant stake in Odel has nominated four of its senior executives including Datuk Alfred Cheng, 48, Group MD/CEO of the Parkson Retail Group to the Odel board.

Softlogic Equity Research said: "Retail participation encompassed the momentum with main focus surrounding Colombo Land and Development, HVA Foods, Lanka Hospitals , Citrus Leisure and its Citrus Leisure [Warrants 0019]. Banking Sector counters; Commercial Bank and DFCC Bank were among the top turnover slots as both gained 0.5% and 2.5% before closing in the green at LKR103.20 (+0.29%) and LKR117.10 (3.39%) respectively. Further several large on-board transactions were witnessed in a number of penny stocks ; Beruwala Resorts , Panasian Power , Free Lanka Capital and Hydro Power Free Lanka."
