Sampath launches ATM to change foreign currency
Sampath Bank recently scored yet another 'first' with the opening of Sri Lanka's first ATM with the facility to exchange Foreign Currency. The ATM has been located at the Bank's head office at Colombo 2.

Sampath Bank account holders as well as non- account holders can exchange foreign currency through this ATM.

An ATM card is not necessary to access the ATM. The user can do so by inserting his or her Passport number or the National Identity Card number. While at the initial stages only US Dollars can be used for transactions, the bank hopes to extend the facility to other foreign currencies as well in the near future. There is no need to be a customer of Sampath Bank to obtain the service of this ATM machine.

Among the key benefits of the transactions through this ATM is the attractive conversion rate. The user will receive Sri Lankan rupees.

The ATM will be commissioned by the Governor of the Central Bank, Ajith Nivard Cabraal. Deputy Governors of Central Bank, Sampath Bank Chairman Dhammika Perera, Managing Director Aravinda Perera, and members of the Board of Directors also will grace this occasion.

Relaxing few regulations where foreign currency transactions concerned.
This is a good move. ATM installations at key points in major cities would attract many customers.

Sampath Bank commissioned Sri Lanka’s first ever foreign currency exchange ATM at the Sampath Bank Head office in Colombo 2 yesterday. The ATM machine was ceremonially commissioned by Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal. Sampath account holders as well as non-account holders now have the opportunity to exchange foreign currency through this ATM. An ATM card is not necessary to access the ATM. The user can do so by inserting his or her passport number or the national identity card number. At the initial stages, only US dollars can be used for transaction. However, the bank hopes to extend the facility to other foreign currencies in the near future.

“The launch of Sri Lanka’s first foreign currency exchange ATM by Sampath Bank shows its commitment to introducing innovative banking solutions for the benefit of the local banking customers,” Sampath Bank Managing Director Aravinda Perera said.

“We will make sure that this will be available at locations where people seek this service. Sampath has always been at the forefront in delivering innovative banking solutions for the local customers from the day it was established,” Perera said. Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal said the Central Bank is always committed to encouraging innovations in the local banking industry and believe that, if Sri Lanka needs to move towards achieving $ 4000 per capita income by 2016, banks must introduce these types of new services to the local baking system.

Sampath Bank recently introduced a new facility, Sampath Mobile Cash, an easy to operate payment system via mobile and CDMA phones.

The system allows the Bank' customers to send money instantly to anyone having any brand of mobile or CDMA phone. Transactions are originated via the Sampath Telebanking System, which authenticates the fund transfer by verifying the sender's user ID and PIN. The sender is requested to enter the recipient's NIC number and mobile/CDMA phone number and amount. The system generates SMS messages to both parties instantly and allows the recipient to use the funds immediately.

Anil Amarasuriya, Managing Director/CEO, Sampath Bank said: "Over the last five years Sri Lanka has moved towards a cashless and cardless eSociety. We at Sampath Bank are proud to be part of this initiative. This is a truly Sri Lankan product developed completely in-house by Sampath Bank and is something we can all be proud of."

Sampath Mobile Cash is yet another example of in-house software development, as all software for this product has been developed by the Bank's in-house systems development team. The software component on POS terminals at merchant outlets, which is licensed software, is the only item developed by sourcing the services of Hypercom HK through their Sri Lankan agent.

Payments to recipients of mobile cash who need not necessarily be Sampath Bank customers, are facilitated through the Bank's branch network. The Bank has also joined Singer Sri Lanka to facilitate payment of cash as well as purchase of goods at Singer's islandwide network.
