Best in the sector HNB NV & NDB
figures respectively
Cash DY 7.1% & 7.5% ( if final Div is Rs.6/-, could be more)
Trades @ P/B 1.0x & 1.0x : very attractive
Both have good core capital ratios , hence pursuing growth is not at risk
HNB has high gross NPL among top, Net interest margin is also high - further NET NPL are comparable to COMB : NOT high
ROE is close to 20%, below SAMP & COMB, bt valuation is compelling

NOT A SALES PITCH, DO YOUR OWN ASSESSMENT

@salt: I agree with you; at current prices, HNB.X and NDB are the best banking shares.

NDB ran from Rs 100 to Rs 150
HNB.X from Rs 111 to Rs 123 over the announcement of Rs 7 dividend.

If I were to buy I would watch carefully to figure out the best time to enter. If there is an overall market run no problem,. Else shares usually drop more than the dividend amount after the XD date.

Also people should not forget the medium sized banks like NTB which is growing admirably even during diffcult times. ( like its nig brothers)

In terms of assets , NDB, DFCC & NTB can be put in same category
Assets Rs billions NDB 172 DFCC 136 NTB 123
Net profits too Rs billions 2.64 2.37 1.92

Historically , NTB is growing in a niche, but the advantage should be gone and all are now medium sized banks

@Leon: You might like to look at CAL Research's banking sector earnings update, which has been uploaded in the Research Section. "SL banks still look attractive", they say...

The larger banks outperformed smaller banks in 2012 as the 18% credit ceiling restricted loan growth and rising interest rates tightened net interest margins for the aggressive smaller banks.
Larger banks continued to improve net interest margins benefiting from their larger CASA base and access to foreign funding whilst branch consolidation led to an improvement in cost-to-income ratios.
Asset quality of COMB and HNB also improved in 2012 due to reducing NPL's and increasing provision coverage.
SL banks still look attractive...
