Jul 02, 2013 (LBT) - S&P SL20 index surpasses gain in ASPI: The benchmark index reversed its early upturn (+33 points) into a rather stagnating mode during mid-day before ending on marginal grounds at 6,140.79 points (+8 points). Gains primarily denoted in S&P SL20 counters; John Keells Holdings (+2.5%), Chevron Lubricants (+2.1%) and Nestle Lanka (+0.4%) weighed positively on the ASPI leading to the S&P SL20 index recording a 14 point gain for the day, extending its YTD performance to 12.2%.

S&P SL20 players booked the top turnover slot amidst absence of crossings; BFI and Diversified heavyweights encompassing the S&P SL20 list edged up to the top turnover slot with Carsons Cumberbatch taking the lead. Activity in the counter heightened with a block of 200k shares which were picked on-board at LKR440.0 before closing flat for the day. Sampath Bank and Hatton National Bank followed depicting some selling pressure as the former closed up marginally and the latter ended flat at LKR160.0. Investor hunt in John Keells Holdings prevailed with the counter rallying a further 2.5% at its close of LKR266.8. The top 5 S&P SL20 players added 58% to the day’s turnover which remained significantly below annual average turnover in the absence of crossings.

Renewed interest in TJL triggered by dividend announcement: Textured Jersey Lanka (+3.3%) denoted strong buying interest triggered by its final dividend announcement. The counter saw several sizable blocks traded between LKR12.5 and LKR12.7 leading to renewing its 52-week high at LKR12.7 (+4.0%). Access Engineering also saw some interest with a block of 500k shares which was traded at LKR20.3 while People’s Leasing Company and Commercial Bank also witnessed some participation.

Retailers step on moderate pace: Retailers focused on a few selected counters amidst sluggish movement of indices. Majority of interest surrounded Textured Jersey Lanka, Central Investment and Finance and PC House.

Market ended in green territory today where positive returns were recorded in both indices. ASI gained 8.04 points (+0.13%) to close at 6,140.79 and S&P SL20 Index gained 14.77 points (+0.43%) to close at 3,462.51. price appreciations in index heavy John Keells Holdings by LKR 7.60 (+3%) and Chevron Lubricants by LKR 9.50 (+3%) contributed positively to the index performances.

Market turnover was LKR 473mn. No crossings were recorded during the day. Carsons cumberbatch with LKR 88mn, Hatton National Bank with LKR 84mn and Sampath Bank with LKR 40mn were the top contributors to the market turnover.

PC House was the heavily traded stock during the day. Further, PCH Holdings and related companies such as PC House, PC Pharma and Orient Garment reached 52 week low prices. Retail investors rallied around Central Investment & Finance and the stock was traded heavily with the speculation on improvements in future performances under the newly appointed managing agent. Stock was the second best gainer and closed at LKR 2.20, up by 16%. In addition to CIFL, Textured Jersey and Touchwood Investments were among the mostly traded stocks.

Foreign participation was 29% and foreign investors were net sellers with a net outflow of LKR 9mn. Cash map ended at 45.9%
