Colombo stocks closed marginally higher on Tuesday with gains in Nestle Lanka (up by 5.1%), John Keells Holdings (up by 0.8%) and Bukit Dharah (up by 0.6%). ASI gained 7.27 index points (0.12%) to end at 6,121.45 while S&P SL 20 Index gained 5.57 points (+0.16%) and ended at 3,477.04.

Daily market turnover was LKR 532mn. John Keells Holdings with LKR 164mn, Chevron Lubricants with LKR 63mn and Nestle with LKR 63mn were the highest contributors to the market turnover.

Meanwhile Textured Jersey, Central Investment & Finance and Nation Lanka Finance were the mostly traded stocks for the day with heavy retail investor participation and Central Investment & Finance was among the top gainers of the day with 20% increase in stock price.

Further, Access Engineering (AEL) today announced that the company together with Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Com. Ltd (ZPMC) has incorporated ZPMC Lanka Company (Pvt) Ltd for maintenance and repair of port handling equipment where ZPMC will hold 70% of equity and AEL will hold 30% of equity in new company. AEL today reached the high of LKR 21.00 and closed LKR 20.70, up LKR 0.10.

Foreign participation was 54% and foreign investors were net buyers with a net inflow of LKR 150mn. Net foreign buying was seen in counters such as Nestle Lanka, DFCC and John Keells Holdings.

Cash map closed at 55%.

Aug 06, 2013 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's stocks closed up 0.12 percent Tuesday with gains seen in the large cap stocks, brokers said.

The benchmark Colombo All Share Index closed 0.12 points higher at 6,121.45 and the S&P SL 20 Index closed 05.57 points higher at 3,477.04 up 0.16 percent.

Turnover was 531 million rupees up from 288 million rupees Monday.

Foreigners brought 363 million rupees worth shares while selling 213 million rupees of shares, in a day that 67 stocks advanced and 105 stocks declined.

Nestle Lanka contributed most to the index closing at 2,049.00 rupees up 99.00 rupees. John Keells Holdings closed at 269.20 rupees up 1.30 rupees and The Bukit Darah closed at 690.50 rupees up 4.90 rupees.

Negative contributors were C.T Holdings closing at 140.00 rupees down 5.00 rupees and Dialog Axaita closing at 8.60 down 10 cents. Aitken Spence closed at 122.00 down 2.00 rupees.

In the banking sector, Sampath Bank closed at 197.20 rupees down 0.40 rupees, Pan Asia closed at 17.50 rupees down 0.10 rupees. DFCC closed at 129.90 rupees up 1.60 rupees and Commercial Bank of Ceylon closed at 119.60 up 0.60 rupees.

Ceylon Tobacco Company closed flat at 1,200.00 and Distilleries Sri Lanka closed at 190.00 down 0.20 rupees.

Aug 06, 2013 (LBT) - Index stayed positive on marginal grounds: The benchmark index moved on a sluggish note however stayed positive on marginal grounds primarily driven by heavy caps; Nestle Lanka (+5.1%), John Keells Holdings (+0.5%) and Bukit Darah (+0.7%). The index closed with a 7 point gain after gaining 14 points at its intra-day high of 6,128.74 points. The S&P SL20 index followed a similar path closing with a gain of 5 points.

Crossings in heavy caps added 35% to the turnover: John Keells Holdings spearheaded the turnover backed by a crossing totaling 353k shares at LKR268.0 and a few mid-sized on-board blocks before it closed with a gain of 0.5%.  Nestle Lanka attracted interest during early trading with a crossing which carried 20k shares at a 52-week high price of LKR2,250.0. On-board activity in the counter denoted strong buying interest with the counter rallying to an intra-day high of LKR2,050.0 (+5.1%). Chevron Lubricants continued to gather interest recording a block of c.149k shares which was crossed off at LKR308.5 while it gained 0.8% at its intra-day high. The three crossings added 35% to the day’s turnover.

Focus on DFCC and TJL: DFCC Bank and Textured Jersey Lanka edged up to the top turnover slot depicting notable buying interest. Each gained 1.3% and 3.8% at their intra-day high levels of LKR130.0 and LKR13.7 respectively. The former recorded an on-board block of c.198k shares at LKR130.0 while the latter saw several mid-sized blocks while highlighting a new 52-week high at LKR13.7. Retail interest surrounded selected counters: Retail participation was narrowed to a few selected counters; Textured Jersey Lanka, Central Investments and Finance and Nation Lanka Finance.
