Aug 16, 2013 (LBT) - Indices recovered to close with a gain: Indices depicted a volatile path as the benchmark index recovered from a dip of 16 points to close with a gain of 13 points at 6,233.21. Nestle Lanka dominated the positive weightings list gaining 5.4% at its close of LKR2,441.3. The S&P SL20 index dipped marginally primarily led by Ceylon Tobacco Company (-1.3%) and John Keells Holdings (-0.4%).

JKH topped the turnover; crossings added 49%: John Keells Holdings spearheaded the turnover backed by two off-board blocks totaling 500k shares at LKR255.0. On-board activity in the counter denoted some selling pressure leading to a 0.4% dip at its close of LKR256.8. Nestle Lanka and Textured Jersey Lanka recorded one crossing each at 52-week high prices of LKR2,500 and LKR13.5 respectively. Vallibel One recorded an off-board block of c.2 mn shares at LKR17.3. The 5 crossings added 49% to the day’s turnover.

Counters which released earnings today gathered interest: Tokyo Cement Voting and Non-Voting gathered interest followed by its earnings release which denoted strong net earnings growth as each closed up 11.8% and 9.7% respectively. Notable buying interest was seen in Commercial Bank Voting and Non-Voting. Activity in the former heightened after a block of 107k shares was picked on-board at LKR119.5. Expo Lanka Holdings continued to gather interest as it closed with a gain of 2.8% at LKR7.4. Moderate retail activity: Retail activity was moderate and surrounded Tokyo Cement [Non-Voting], Expo Lanka Holdings, Panasian Power and Nation Lanka Finance.

Half the turnover on the Colombo bourse came off block trades in JKH, Textured Jersey, Vallibel One and Nestle which accounted for over half the day’s turnover (Rs.294.6 million of a total Rs. 596.2 mn.) with the indices closing in opposite directions – the All Share up by 13.11 points (0.21%) while S&P SL20 was down 4.12 points (0.12%) with 107 gainers ahead of 76 losers while 128 counters closed flat.

"The ASPI ended higher for a fourth consecutive day amid gains in selected manufacturing, consumer, and banking counters. Trades on JKH and NEST collectively accounted for over 50% of market turnover, inclusive of block trades. The market also saw crossings on TJL and VONE," John Keells Stockbrokers said.

JKH saw two parcels totaling 500,000 shares crossed at Rs.255 contributing Rs.127.5 million to turnover while Textured Jersey with a single parcel of slightly over 2 million shares crossed at Rs.13.50 contributing Rs.27.4 million; Vallibel One with a single parcel of slightly over 2 million crossed at Rs.17.30 generated Rs.35.2 million and Nestle with a single parcel of 41,800 shares crossed at Rs.2,500 contributed Rs.104.5 million.

JKH, the most active counter on the floor in value terms, closed Rs.2.80 down at Rs.255 trading between Rs.250 and Rs.258 contributing Rs.76.8 million to the day’s business volumes.

Interest in Tokyo Cement, both voting and non-voting, was seen on the back of good results, brokers said. Tokyo non-voting with over 1.6 million shares done closed Rs.1.90 up at Rs.21.50 while the voting share closed Rs.2.90 up at Rs.26.60 on nearly 0.5 million shares.

Expolanka continued to attract volumes closing 30 cents up at Rs.7.50 on nearly 2.4 million shares while Panasian Power closed 10 cents up at Rs.2.50 on slightly over 3.1 million shares.

Commercial Bank (voting) with nearly 0.2 million shares done closed flat at Rs.119.50, ComBank (non-voting) closing a rupee up at Rs.95 on 94,780 shares and HNB (non-voting) down 90 cents to Rs.114.10 on 54,015 shares were banking stocks showing some volume.

Lion closed Rs.18 up at Rs.385 on 16,151 shares trading between a range of Rs.370 and Rs.385 after seeing a price decline the previous day.
