Hemas Power PLC is set to get the final set of approvals for its power project in Uganda in East Africa by January, officials said.
“We will clear the final stage by early next year,” an official told the Business Times, adding that Hemas is getting close to finalising it. “Getting into new shores and new segments is a part of our strategy and we are bullish on this project,” he said.
Power industry analysts say that in most East African countries there’s a severe shortage of electrification. “There are many
agencies (donor, etc.) to assist power generation. The governments there give firms much encouragement,” an analyst said. He added that in that part of Africa, a lot of opportunities to generate hydro power amongst other kinds of power generation is available.
The official said that Hemas is also planning to build a 1.5 Mega Watt (MW) mini hydro plant in Kegalle. “It is ready for construction.” He added that the company is trying to secure two more hydro projects in the Kandy district. “Both these together will have a capacity of more than 3 MW,” he said.
