Comet ISON was a pale object coming towards the Sun for past few months and all of sudden ,
it has started out bursting dust and gases forming two tails and they are clearly visible through good quality binoculars.

Here is an image done by Damian Peach somewhere in Northern hemisphere.
ISON is coming C2012_s1_2013_11_15dp

If you are living in the Dry Zone  or anywhere with clear sky you may be able to see it before sunrise in Eastern sky, closer to horizon.  You need a binocular and trained eye to locate it. If the outburst continues, the comet should become easily visible to the naked eye by 25th or even before.

For Colombo people , sorry , town lighting and dust in air will make it impossible for you. If it become more brighter than magnitude +4 Colombians may get a chance to see it before 28th.

I am visiting my selected place in Nagollagama  , next week and if I photographed it I will paste here.
The comet will reach closest point to Sun on 28th this month. Some people suspect it may fall into the Sun as the path is too closer. If not , it should  reappear in the morning sky just before sunrise in December and in western sky after sunset in 2014 January.

comet of the century' destroyed by the Sun

Falls into the sun and burns into a million tiny pieces !

Despite there being great hope for Comet ISON, it appears it disappeared behind the Sun today never to emerge again. Comet ISON has been destroyed by the intense heat and activity of our star, the Sun.

Astronomers tracking the “comet of the century” tonight believed it had flown too close to the sun and had broken up. Comet Ison was due to pass within 730,000 miles of the sun’s surface shortly after 6.30pm EST yesterday.

If enough of it survived, it promised to be one of the brightest seen this century.

Nasa solar physicist Alex Young said the comet had been expected to appear in images from the Solar Dynamics Observatory spacecraft at around 5pm British time, but almost four hours later there was "no sign of it whatsoever" !

Latest news:
NASA space probe recorded the following live video of the incidence.

Wow ! now they say the comet is not dead !

When the comet disappeared after 'almost touching' Sun's surface NASA and other agencies announced its demise.
There was no sign of a comet in the images from solar probes for many hours and all assumed it was sucked by the Sun.

Now few hours later , a comet like object is re appearing in the predicted path of the ISON.

I will update with possible reasons for this unexpected situation for the few people who are interested in the subject, although this is not a star watching blog.

For the time being, we can say 'even NASA can go wrong' !

You are right. This shows how small we are compaired to the universe and the poor knowledge & capabilities of our scientists.

10ISON is coming Empty Comet Ison: Nasa Suggests Chunk Lives On Sat Nov 30, 2013 1:56 pm

Sky NewsSky News – 59 minutes ago

A streak of light seen streaming away from the Sun has given astronomers hope that a chunk of the much-anticipated "comet of the century" has survived its fiery encounter.

Telescopes tracking Comet Ison saw at least part of it emerge on the other side of the star around six hours after disappearing from view.

Experts at Nasa said the white smear seen in pictures from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory suggests at least part of Ison's icy nucleus is still intact.

However, they warned the comet appeared to have shrunk in size and may yet turn out to have disintegrated altogether, with a trail of debris being all that remains.

Karl Battams, an astrophysicist at the US Naval Research Laboratory in Washington DC, described the comet as a "ridiculous, crazy, dynamic and unpredictable object" that continues to "amaze, astound and confuse".

"Right now it does appear that at least some small fraction of Ison has remained in one piece and is actively releasing material," he said.

"We have no idea how big this nucleus is, if there is indeed one. If there is a nucleus, it is still too soon to tell how long it will survive.

"If it does survive for more than a few days, it is too soon to tell if the comet will be visible in the night sky."

Mr Battams said the remnants of Ison temporarily faded from sight after appearing on the other side of the Sun before rising from the solar corona "like an icy phoenix".

"This has unquestionably been the most extraordinary comet that I have ever witnessed," he said.

"The universe is an amazing place and it has just amazed us again."

Comets are frozen balls of space dust left over from the formation of stars and planets more than four billion years ago.

Ison, which is officially known as Comet C/2012 S1, had been hurtling through space at speeds of 845,000mph.

It was expected to be met with temperatures of about 2,700C (4,892F) and an intense gravitational pull as it passed within 730,000 miles of the surface of the Sun.

Western scientists and astronomers are repeatedly saying this is an extraordinary comet and its behaviour is harder to explain.

I cannot see any unusual phenomena in this comet.

Most extraordinary scene was the silence of major players in this subject during last few days. We could not find any straight forward announcement by NASA or any other institutes except some blog writing by some individuals.

As Mr. Haputantri said this comet disclosed the real capability of our scientists. They were just watching the images sent by some space probes and were telling this and that.

Now we get latest images and even a kid can realize what has happened. In few hrs or days the big people will tell almost the same.

Pl. wait till the entire Gif get loaded.

ISON is coming Ison-cor2a-580

You can see the comet was facing continuous solar winds  in its journey to the perihelion (closest point to the Sun) , and going trough two strong streams at South East of the image, about 60-70 % of the material was lost when it reached the perihelion.
Somehow about 25-30 % of the comet nucleus was intact and it reappeared after passing the Sun giving us new hopes.

Then unfortunately, day before yesterday, the Sun emitted a strong flow of solar wind and they struck violently to the remains of the comet to disintegrate it completely. We can watch this  when the comet travel in the upper left area of the image.

That is all.

I think the comet is no more.
Somehow this is not unusual. If they get a chance travel that much closer to the sun they will realize it. Smile
