Sri Lanka tourist arrivals up 27-pct in October
19 Nov, 2013 07:25:27
Nov 19, 2013 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's tourist arrivals rose 27.9 percent to 102,805 in October 2013 from a year earlier, helped by surging arrivals from China, Maldives, India and Russia, official data showed.

Up to October arrivals were up 16.8 percent to 904,015.
D S Jayaweera, director general of Sri Lanka tourism development authority said last week arrivals would top a million in November.

Sri Lanka will have to draw about 296,000 visitors in November and December, or up 29 percent from a year earlier, to reach a targeted 1.2 million visitors for 2013.

Arrivals have been at or slightly above 26 percent over the past three months, and if the trend is maintained Sri Lanka would reach or come close to the target.

In 2012, arrivals grew 25 percent in November but only 15 percent in December, which is the peak month for Sri Lanka where the resorts depend on Western European winter travellers.

In October, the strongest absolute growth was seen from China with 5,798 visitors up 163 percent from a year earlier or 3,598. Maldivian visitors rose 86 percent or by 3,029 to 6,538.

Indian visitors were up 2,653 or 15 percent to 20,307. India is Sri Lanka's largest generating market, producing 151,896 visitors, up 8.7 percent.

The Indian market stagnated after Sri Lanka re-introduced visas to the country but double digit growth had been seen in the last few months.

Analysts say Sri Lanka being relatively less expensive than more distant alternatives after a steep depreciation of the Indian rupee, may be helping the country.

Western European arrivals rose 17.9 percent to 28,662 in October with UK arrivals up 6.9 percent to 9,375, Germany up 26.5 percent to 6,812, France up 21.1 percent to 4,208 and the Netherlands up 31.4 percent to 1,578.

Up to October arrivals were up 14.7 percent to 336,493.

Eastern European arrivals were up 59 percent to 11,206 with Ukrainian arrivals up 40 percent to 3,639 in addition to strong growth from Russia.

Middle Eastern arrivals were up 45.7 percent to 7,624, with visitors up to October up 12 percent to 49,250.
East Asian arrivals were up 31.3 percent to 14,668 in October led by China. Up to October China has generated 34,951 visitors up 85.7 percent.

Increasing the number of tourists is very good news for the country's economy & the hotel sector as well. However, from high end to low end hotel managements, still are groaning about the low occupancy rate. I guess it is the reason for contradictory statements been publishing in the media of the accuracy of arrival figures, stating that all type of incoming people are counted as tourists. For example, Many Sri Lankans, who hold foreign passports, come on vacation & they stay at their homes, not in hotels. Resident foreign workers who travel often in & out etc.. Has tourism authority got a new plan of counting methodology to track down actual number of tourist who really belong to tourism category.

The month of October recorded the highest growth so far this year with arrivals up 2.1 percent to 102,805 from 80,379 a year ago, Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority data showed.

With the government and the industry expecting more than 1.2 million arrivals to support the ambitious 2.5 million arrival by 2016 to generate more than US$ 2.75 billion in foreign exchange income, a 20 percent growth is required this year followed by no less than 29 percent in the following years. With the tourism season due soon and the room capacity strengthened, the month of August has brought hope that the set goal for this year could be achieved.

Overall tourist arrivals during the ten months from North America increased 10.1 percent to 51,700 from 46,963 with arrivals in August increased 24.1percent to 5,2458 from 4,226, while arrivals from Latin America and the Caribbean increased 10.4 percent to 1,411 from 1,278 during the eight months with arrivals in August up 36.5 percent to 202 from 148.

Arrivals from Western Europe increased 14.7 percent to 336,493 from 293,472 during the eight months with the month of August showing the surge of 17.9 percent to 28,662 from 24,303, while tourists from Eastern Europe increased 28.3 percent to 64,263 from 50,087 with the month of August recorded as increase of 59 percent to 11,206 from 7,048.

Arrivals from East Asia increased 25.9 percent to 126,733 from 100,678 with August recorded a growth of 31.3 percent to 14,668 from 11,168, while arrivals from South Asia increased 16.7 percent to 225,707 from 193,465 with August showing an increase 29.6 percent to 30,512 from 23,538.

Arrivals from Australasia increased 10.7 percent to 44,536 from 40,217 with arrivals in the month of August up 3.6 percent to 4,161 from 4,017.

Several Mixed Development Projects and Hotel Projects in the country approved by the Board of Investment are expected to generate large number of tourist arrivals according several research firms. The development of several tourism zones in the island has already been completed and the government is in the watch out for more available land to create hospitality zones.
