Colombo stock market continued to move into the green on Thursday with marginal returns in both market indices. ASPI closed the day at 5,793.19, up by 5.38 points or 0.09% while 20 – Script S&P SL Index closed at 3,189.44, up by 7.17 points or 0.23%. Price appreciations in index weighted stocks such as Bukit Dharah by 3.2%, Ceylon Tobacco by 0.9% and Ceylinco Insurance by 3.8% contributed positively to the index advancement.

Daily market turnover was LKR 248mn. Asiri Hosptals made the highest contribution of LKR 66mn to the daily turnover followed by Chevron Lubricants (LKR 35mn) and Kahawatte Plantations (LKR 14mn). No crossings were recorded in today’s session. Asiri Hosptals and Kahawatte Plantations reached 52 week high prices and closed at LKR 16.00 (+0.63%) and LKR 40.00 (+0.50%) respectively.

Meanwhile, The Finance voting and non-voting, Abans Electricals and Touchwood Investments traded mostly throughout the day.

Interestingly the debenture issues of Citizen Development Bank (LKR 1.0bn), Nations Trusts Bank (LKR 3.0bn) and National Development Bank (LKR 10.0bn) which opened their subscription lists today to raise a total of LKR14.0bn were oversubscribed today itself.

Cash map for today was 51%. Foreign participation was 24% of total market activity and foreign investors were net buyers for the day with a net inflow of LKR 13mn.

Dec 12, 2013 (LBT) - Indices remained sluggish: The market encountered yet another day of low turnover and activity amidst stagnant indices as the ASPI closed on marginal grounds at 5,793.19 points. Gains in Bukit Darah (+3.2%), Ceylon Tobacco Company (+0.8%) and Ceylon Tea Services (+9.1%) and losses in Carson Cumberbatch (-1.3%) held the indices on marginal grounds. The S&P SL20 index ended up 7 points at 3,189.44.

A few on-board blocks fuelled turnover: A few large on-board blocks fuelled turnover amidst the absence of crossings. Asiri Hospital Holdings and Kahawatte Plantations saw some interest as each touched their respective 52-week high levels at LKR16.4 and LKR43.0. The former recorded three large on-board blocks which amounted to c.3.7 mn shares at LKR16.0 while the latter added 334k shares at LKR40.0. Chevron Lubricants Lanka denoted some selling pressure as a block of 130k shares traded at LKR263.1 during the final trading hour.

Interest on banks surrounded COMB: Commercial Bank witnessed continued interest as it traded among the top turnover slot reflecting some buying interest. The counter gained 0.9% at its intra-day high while its Non-Voting share also gained 1.3%. Renewed interest was seen in Haycarb and Seylan Bank [Non-Voting]. Retail activity highlighted a few selected counters: Retail activity was low and primarily focused on The Finance [Non-Voting] and Voting which gained 20% and 24% for the day. Activity was also seen in Abans Electricals, Sanasa Development Bank and People’s Leasing Company which announced an interim dividend today.
