Civil aviation Minister Priyankara Jayaratne says in Parliament that Sri Lankan Airlines has incurred a loss of Rs 25 Billion in 2013-14.

If we look to the Maldives, their tourism industry has grown without a strong airline. Instead of a strong airline industry the Maldives leapfrogged their way by offering great deals the tour operators ---> that is the way to go Wink

Due to utterly incapable management skills of a few with no foresight is burdening the whole country.

To cover such losses, poor man's food and all other commodities are raised or taxed .
I recall the Supermarket tax. How little will it bring compared to this major loss?
But how many people are effected .

Time to let someone else manage if they can't do the job. ( am not saying to sell the Air line completely)

Btw, wonder how much the lease of an Aircraft per year is?

Run a profitable airline is one of the toughest jobs in the world.
Run a government own budget airline is even harder.
Wish someone ceases the operation of Mihin air from tomorrow.

Agree 100 %.

More than what we think are affected but come elections and they forget all and remember winning the war and Galle Expressway only.
So true and sadly so but.

The notion of every country must have its own flagship airline is a old school thinking no longer applies in these times.

If Air France can be run by KLM, then why not Sri Lanka is managed by someone like Singapore Airlines, for instance.

Btw, wonder how much the lease of an Aircraft per year is?

There is a glut in the Aircraft market and if you are wise, you can come out with a great bargain, even with a wet lease agreement.

But when we go there, they are only calculating the Commissions that they can get out of those deals only.
