Sri Lanka's main opposition as well as Buddhist nationalist party within the ruling coalition have spoken out against three large 'integrated resorts' which were given sweeping tax breaks, saying casinos would be promoted through the projects.
One project is connected to Australian casino tycoon James Packer and Ravi Wijeratne, who owns gaming businesses in Sri Lanka. Another project is connected to Dhammika Perera, who also operates three casinos in Colombo.
A third project by John Keells Holdings is expected to lease space to a foreign gaming brand.
