Sri Lankan President to hand over gold possessed by LTTE to rightful owners today

Thu, Dec 4, 2014, 11:37 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 04, Colombo: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa will hand over another stock of gold seized by the LTTE to the rightful owners today at a function to be held at the Temple Trees.

Defence and Urban Development Ministry Media Spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya said that at the ceremony today, headed by the President, 2,184 parcels of gold jewellery will be released to 1,960 identified rightful owners in the North.

President Rajapaksa, last month at a function in Kilinochchi, symbolically inaugurated the return of seized gold with the handover of jewellery to 25 owners of the Northern Province.

The latest 1960 identified owners from Mannar (223), Vavuniya (319), Jaffna (45), Kilinochchi (1187) and Mullaitivu (186) are scheduled to arrive at Temple Trees in Colombo on December 4, to receive their jewellery from the President.

Today's handover of jewellery is expected to rebuild trust and to restore the traditions of the people of the North, according to the Spokesman.

The LTTE in their Eelam Banks had a large amount of gold either forcefully taken from the civilians or that was pawned to their banks.

The security forces after the end of the war recovered the considerable stock of gold jewellery from the LTTE banks, documented, properly catalogued and detained for safe-keeping under the custody of the Security Forces on the directions of the President.

According to the Army Commander, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, another 419 rightful owners of the gold jewellery are yet to be traced.

In the event if a legitimate owner cannot be found, the valuables will be handed over to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka in accordance with State regulations and provisions.

The gold should have been handed over to the Central bank and people could claim from there after proving ownership..
President can not hand over the gold as he wishes, by doing so he shows that his family kept gold with them
.

the claim of people that MR family kept gold is right, even SF raised this question what happened to the gold taken from LTTE sometime back..
