Attorney-at-Law Upul Jayasuriya has been appointed as the Chairman of the Board of Investments of Sri Lanka by President Maithripala Sirisena.

A student of Royal College Colombo, Upul Jayasuriya joined the Attorney General’s Department as a state counsel in 1978.

In 1978, he was also appointed as the First Legal Adviser of the Greater Colombo Economic Commission, which is the present Board of Investments of Sri Lanka.

I prefer to have a gentleman involved in business or have qualifications in that field rather than appointing lawyers for a post like this .It is not justifiable satisfying one person who lobbied for ............than attracting most wanted FDI.
Because ultimately all of us will have to pay

Hats off to you Soileconomy.
You speak with conviction as you are an economist by speciality, that's why.
People who have studied and worked in their respective fields take ownership and commitment. Managers are required to run companies and they recruit the best professionals and experts to carry out specific jobs.

You are quite correct to state that a professional has to head the BOI.
I also have worked with the BOI many years ago and know the complexities and responsibilities in carrying that function. Loss of control can mean billions of revenue for the government. Today there are many companies exploiting the concessions granted under the BOI schemes due to poor regulation, monitoring, reporting and coordination between the Customs, Inland Revenue and other related departments of the state.

Putting the fright of a title "lawyer" does not deter anyone carrying out malpractices.
Just think of it.
