jana. how does the beta value work ???

The beta value is a measure of a stock's volatility with respect to a market index.

For example:

A beta value = 1 - A stocks price movement is equal to the movement of the market index.
A beta value < 1 - A stocks price movement is less than proportional to the movement of the market index
A beta value > 1 - A stocks price movement is more than proportional to the movement of the market index
A beta value <0 - A stock moves in the opposite direction to that of the market index (quite rare).

This is my opinion since that is a highly subjective question. Our market is currently extremely volatile and hence you'd want to hold stocks with beta values less than 1 since the value of your portfolio will not fall as much as the market does when it falls. On the same note, your portfolio will also not rise as much as the market does when it rises. There's less of an upside, but in these risky times, minimizing the downside is what's important.

When there's a clear upward trend in the market, you'll want to hold stocks with beta values greater than 1 since the value of your portfolio will rise far more than the market's performance (although on the other hand your portfolio's value will drop by a greater proportion if the market suddenly turns downwards).

Ideally you shouldn't hold stocks of just one beta range in your portfolio, you should try to diversify as much as possible in order to ensure you can benefit from any given situation in the market. I'm sorry to say there's no strict formula to do this, it's more of an art that you must perfect with practice.

I must state something important:

Please remember that beta is purely part of technical analysis. It uses historic data to make future predictions about the volatility of a stock. History is not a assured guarantor of the future! Remember that.
