Mar 17, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government is compelled to halt the construction of the new defense headquarters being built in Battaramulla due to the irregularities in the expenditure, the Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayake said.

Minister Karunanayake addressing a public meeting in Colombo Monday (16) said the construction of the new defense headquarters complex will be halted as the estimated cost has gone over Rs.50 billion.

A Spokesperson to the Ministry of Defense told the media the cost for the construction of the new headquarters has gone over the estimated value and construction will be suspended until a formal investigation is launched.

The construction of the new military complex located in a 56-acre land in the administrative capital of Sri Lanka, Sri Jayewardenepura, was initiated by the previous government to free the prime land in Galle Face where the Defense Ministry is currently located.

It will consist of the headquarters of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, the offices of the Commanders of the three armed forces, training centers, operational rooms, research centers, and other facilities.

I just don't understand what we have to defend!

We spend so much money on defense as if we have mighty nations gunning for our small island? Do we want to buy submarines, fighter jets or cruise missiles?

What war to we have with the LTTE?
What civil commotion do we have with the JVP?
What civil disturbance do we have with the Union leaders?
What crime do we have that we need so much of money for?
All the money is wasted on the luxury of living of the higher ups.

Spend the money on education, health, agriculture, ethics, culture and activities that promote productivity and efficiency. Once these are attended to defense is left only to a minimal level where the worst type of people can be dealt with!

Very Happy

Spending on infrastructure something we should do and continue... roads, lotus tower, off shore harbour, racing tracks,
much more... !

those days once the market come, then started to build the infrastructure.
But these days, first build the infrastructure then market. E.G DuBAI
(knowledge cities/ U-cities/Digital cities/Informational cities/....etc etc)
with rich people , money comes, then the business flows + the skills.....!

Sri Lanka is a tiny island, we need big army to control 20M+. There is no harm in that. it was a good idea to free goldface and take the army HQ to some where else.

The problem was there was no LAW and ORDER with MR regime.
therfore,MR had to pay the price for his Martial Law and commissions
It does not mean we have to stop all good stuff he did.

Yaha palanaya seems like taking revenge.
