Former Army Commander of Sri Lanka General Sarath Fonseka will be appointed as the country's first ever Field Marshal on Sunday (22).
President Maithripala Sirisena today announced that General Fonseka will be promoted to the rank of Field Marshal. Field Marshal is a very senior military rank, ordinarily senior to the general officer ranks. It is a lifetime position and a Field Marshal is entitled to the benefits of a Cabinet Minister. Promotion to the rank of field marshal in many countries historically required extraordinary military achievement by a general, usually a wartime victory.
