Sri Lanka rice harvest enough till September

COLOMBO (EconomyNext) - Sri Lanka's paddy production in the main 'Maha' season is enough to meet domestic rice consumption needs till September 2015, the Department of Agriculture has forecast.
With a cultivated extent of 800,303 hectares, the production forecast for this season is 2.65 million metric tonnes, two percent higher than the average production of last three 'Maha' seasons.
The crop forecast by the Socio Economics and Planning Centre Page, Department of Agriculture in Peradeniya is based on the reported sown extent up to end-February 2015.
"Maha 2014/15 paddy production is sufficient for domestic consumption till September 2015," it said.
The island imports rice to meet shortfalls in paddy production.
The production forecast estimated that despite the crop losses due to floods paddy cultivated extent reported up to end-February of 800,303 ha is 97 percent of the target.
The Agriculture Department said it is expecting an average 'Yala' secondary season this year and that the expected paddy production in 2015 would be sufficient till January 2016.
Almost two-thirds of paddy cultivation is by irrigation and the balance rain fed.
