A programme has been launched to introduce Electronic Identity Cards to pensioners since the identification card currently in use was initiated in the 1960s.

The new identification card has been introduced with the help of new technology. With the use of this card, pensioners will be able to carry out transactions such as receiving their pension, among others.

Director General of the Department of Pensions, Sunil Hettiarachchi stated that in the future, utility payments such as electricity bills and insurance covers could be paid using the new electronic ID.

However, they will still want the Photocopy of the NIC certified by the Grama Niladari and attached with a police report. Also 5 years Tax Returns and an affidavit stating that the pensioner is bankrupt.

This is why SRI Lanka will never catchup with Singapore in the near future.

We are far behind in using the benefit from advanced technology. Banks, departments, urban councils & many institutions still use plenty of manual processes wasting considerable time & energy of both worker & applicant.

No doubt, public sector fear of pruning number of employees, if such system solutions are placed, that threaten the political gains.

Another gimmick by authorities to collect money. First they introduced the new number plates for vehicles where lot of people made money in giving the contract and the end users have to pay for these plates whereas earlier we could have got it done for much lesser amount. Then the new driving licence was introduced where again people had to pay . Now the new identity card will not come free of charge. But has any of these new electronic hi-tech issues helped the consumer at all.
