In the present administration's 100 days programme the government proposed to pay a guaranteed price of Rs. 80 per kilogram of raw and tender tea leaves produced by small scale tea estate holders.
Accordingly, Minister of Plantation Industry Lakshman Kiriella launched the first phase of the program this morning at the Kalubovitiyana Tea Factory premises in Morawaka .
The government has also granted a guaranteed price of Ra. 50 for a kilo of paddy and a guaranteed price for rubber.
However, economists estimate that tea and rubber price guarantees with cost the government Rs 4.1 billion a quarter.
