Stocks are likely to take a breather before moving higher. It is normal to have these types of volatility in bull market and it creates opportunities. We should not forget that there are all types of market players such as one day trader, swing trader, long term investor, top trader, contrarian investors etc. So time to time we cannot avoid market volatility.

In stock market current prices are not that important. Future prices and future earnings are very important. It is time to identity some cash cows, turnaround companies and value stocks with growth potential. Some loss making companies also should make above average results during next 18 months. Short term, specially one day or less than one week trading is very dangerous. It is better to stay with business that we know very well.

How many times we have experienced these types of things in the past. It is normal. We need to identify crowd psychology as well. Roaring bull market is yet to come. So far one year return for CSE is around 13%. Some devolved and emerging markets are close to the top. On the other hand some markets including Sri-Lankan market is very attractive due to amount of great value stocks available in the market. It is time to identify future winners in the following categories.

Today’s loss making companies which can become tomorrow’s profit making companies

Companies having strong outlook for their industry in the coming months and years (We should see some cash cows)

Other value stocks

Real growth stocks

Sri-Lankan market should have few more than five baggers as well in this bull market. We should identify at least one more than five bagger stock to recover losses we made in the past.

I am studying now. I am trying to find one such stock to keep in my basket. Sometimes it could be in my existing basket. Everything should be very positive. However keep an eye on stocks trading great discount to the market.

REXP traded below Rs.30. It went above Rs.150. We should have few more.

We should pay attention to the following to identify some great winners in the market. It is not too big to fall. It is not too small to become big. We should see emerging companies and emerging commodities in the coming years.

ROE should go higher and higher

Industry outlook should be strong

Earnings and growth should accelerate
Forward P/E at least for next two years
Peg ratio
Cash position
