The downward crawl on the Colombo Stock Exchange persisted yesterday with turnover at a low Rs. 658.4 million, down from the previous day’s Rs. 771.3 million, with both indices down – the ASPI by 23.89 points (0.33%) an S&P SL20 by 14.55 points (0.37%) with 114 losers ahead of 84 gainers while 127 counters closed flat.
"The market was down again and it’s difficult to predict where the bottom is," a broker said. "Trading was lackluster and within a narrow range. There were two single parcel block trades in Tokyo Cement (non-voting) and Hemas contributing Rs. 118.3 million to turnover."
As on the previous day, there was a net foreign inflow of Rs. 30 million with foreign purchases of Rs. 255.87 million ahead of sales of Rs. 226.69 million.
Tokyo saw half a million shares crossed at Rs. 41 in a deal worth Rs. 20.5 million and Hemas slightly over 1.1 million shares crossed at Rs. 88 contributing Rs. 97.8 million to the day’s turnover.
People’s Leasing (PLC) topped the floor trades followed by ACL Cables and Textured Jersey. PLC closed 40 cents down at Rs. 22.20 on nearly 2.6 million shares traded between Rs. 22.20 and Rs. 22.60 with most of the trades done in three large parcels.
ACL closed Rs. 2.30 up at Rs. 110 on nearly 0.42 million shares done between Rs. 107.50 and Rs. 110 with brokers saying there was a 90,000 share parcel changing hands with the rest done in smaller quantities.
