Minister of Fisheries Mahinda Amaraweera says that the European Union ban on Sri Lankan fish exports will be lifted soon. |
Minister Amaraweera said EU officials had informed that Sri Lanka had fulfilled the regulations required to meet European standards required to lift the ban. A technical evaluation team from the EU arrived in Sri Lanka earlier this month to assess Sri Lanka’s progress in implementing its recommendations on the prevention of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing practices. The EU ban took effect in January this year over the failure of the previous administration to prevent local fishermen from violating the international fisheries laws. |
