Govt. takes action to regulate unregistered microfinance institutions

Disclosing shocking data regarding the microfinance sector, he noted that of the 11,000 microfinance institutions operating in the country, only 5 are registered.

He also underscored the severity of penalties for running microfinance institutions that fail to meet legal requirements, stating that such actions could lead to fines of up to Rs. 5 million and imprisonment for five years.

Vehicle import ban : Govt issues clarification Idea

The ban imposed on vehicle imports was not taken up for discussion at the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, State Minister of Finance Shehan Semasinghe said.

He revealed this while speaking to reporters after attending a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers at the Presidential Secretariat last evening (Jan 08).

“Under the current circumstances, we cannot assure that tax revenue will increase and that the import ban on vehicles can be lifted,” he said.

State Minister Semasinghe further said receiving more foreign exchange, an increase in foreign exchange, and the long-term stabilization of the economy all have to be taken into consideration.

Pointing out that, therefore, quick decisions cannot be taken concerning this matter, he said Sri Lanka is currently benefiting from the various difficult decisions that have been taken thus far.

The State Minister also reminded that the vehicle import ban is currently in effect only for vehicles of personal use and not other sectors.

His comments come amidst recent media reports claiming that the government was considering lifting the import ban on vehicles. However, the Finance Ministry has denied the reports. (NewsWire)

Thing is in many sectors there will be few best performers. Sooner we identify and buy them better for our investment journey. Can't complain. There are stocks which appreciated over 100% over the last year. Simply, Stock market is a fight between bear and bull. Bear market creates long term wealth for intelligent investors.

Future outlook of finance and leasing industry in Sri Lanka

Based on the context provided, the future outlook of the finance and leasing industry in Sri Lanka can be inferred as cautiously optimistic. Here are some points that can be concluded from the given context:

- Economic Recovery: There is an anticipation of economic stability by the end of 2024, with expectations of inflation stabilizing and interest rates on a downward trajectory. This economic landscape is likely to support growth in the finance and leasing industry.

- Political Stability: The planned elections are expected to contribute to a more optimistic outlook for Sri Lanka, which could positively impact the finance and leasing industry by providing a stable political environment conducive to business and investment.

- GDP Growth: The government aims to achieve GDP growth of 2.9% in 2024 and 3.2% in 2025. A recovering GDP is a positive sign for the finance and leasing industry as it indicates overall economic health and potential for increased business activity.

-Policy Framework: The expectation is that the current policy framework will continue, with expansionary monetary policies and tight fiscal measures. This could provide a stable environment for the finance and leasing industry to operate and grow.

- Investment Climate: The Port City Colombo project and other initiatives could attract investments and create jobs, which would benefit the finance and leasing industry by increasing demand for financial services.

- Banking Sector Performance: There is an expectation of broadly improving results in the banking sector for Sri Lanka from 2024 onwards, which could have a positive spillover effect on the finance and leasing industry.

- Challenges: Despite the positive outlook, there are challenges such as the impact of global events like the war in Ukraine and the Middle-Eastern crisis on oil prices, which could indirectly affect the finance and leasing industry in Sri Lanka.

- Consumer Spending Habits: The industry needs to carefully consider the economic situation and consumer spending habits shaped by the downturn to overcome hurdles and drive sustainable market expansion.

In summary, while there are challenges and uncertainties, the overall sentiment for the future of the finance and leasing industry in Sri Lanka is one of cautious optimism, with expectations of economic recovery and growth that could support the industry's expansion.
