ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's President Maithripala Sirisena said in a tweet that a new Central Bank Governor will be appointed within the day.

"I will appoint a new Governor to the Central Bank in the coming hours," President Sirisena said.

The term of controversial Governor Arjuna Mahendran ends on June 30. There have been warnings that unless a governor is appointed, financial markets may face instability on July 01.

ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has visited the central bank, with a new governor to be appointed before July 01.

President Sirisena, and Prime Minister Wickremesinghe had a discussed about the economy.

State Minister for Finance Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene said a person with experience will be appointed for one year.

Among those mentioned as likely to be appointed as Governor are current Deputy Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe, Ranjith Fernando, Dinesh Weerakkody, Lalith Samarakoon and Saman Kelegama.

President Maithripala sent a tweet Tuesday saying a new governor will be appointed within hours. A new governor has to be appointed before July 01.

ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's Deputy Central Bank Governor Nandalal Weeresinghe is mostly likely to replace outgoing Governor Arjuna Mahendran, sources said.

There was no confirmation from the office of the President, who is the appointing authority.

Weerasinghe is the most senior Deputy Governor appointed to the post in 2011.

Weerasinghe is a career officer who was wide experience in economic research, monetary policy and had also served at the International Monetary Fund as alternative executive director.
