Amana Takaful Life Becomes First Sri Lankan Life Insurer to List

Amana Takaful Life Ltd. has launched an initial public offering to raise as much as 75 million rupees (US$523,900) to beef up its capital expenditure.
The Sri Lankan takaful life insurer, a fully owned subsidiary of Amana Takaful plc, will become the first segregated life insurer in Sri Lanka to publicly list following the mandatory segregation of life and nonlife insurance companies implemented in Feb. 2015. The company was spun off from Amana Takaful, taking over the latter life business portfolio.
ATLL will offer 50 million ordinary voting shares at 1.50 rupee per share, which represents a 10% stake in the company. The shares will list on the Diri Savi board (for smaller companies) of the Colombo Stock Exchange
Reyaz Jeffrey, ATLLâ??s chief executive officer, in a statement said the capital raising will provide the company further impetus to take advantage of growth opportunities in local market.
The Sri Lankan market is relatively untapped and we see increased demand for life insurance, stemming from key economic activity and infrastructure development. As we approach US$4,000 per capita income, there will be key segments that will actively seek life insurance as opposed to the current push strategy,Jeffrey said.
ATLL saw business grow at a compound annual growth rate of 31% over the last five years and recorded a gross written premium of 928 million rupees for the financial year ending Dec. 31, 2015.
The company said it aims to grow at a CAGR of 34% over the next five years, supported by strategic initiatives that include growing its agency force. The insurer added negotiations are underway to enter into bancassurance agreement with Amana Bank, the group banking arm.
ATLL currently operates a network of nearly 30 branches that cover 22 districts, including all major cities, in the country.
