Parliament dissolved from midnight ???????? 9f1046_sri-lanka-ongoing-political-crisis-has-rattled-allies-neighbours-sri-lanka-640x422AFP

9 Nov 20180
Colombo (AFP) – Two weeks into a showdown between rival prime ministers, the Sri Lankan president’s party admitted for the first time Friday that it does not have a majority to get its candidate through a parliamentary vote of confidence.
President Maithripala Sirisena named authoritarian former president Mahinda Rajapakse as prime minister after sacking Ranil Wickremesinghe on October 26.

Wickremesinghe has since refused to leave the premier’s official residence amid a deepening power struggle. The president also suspended parliament meaning neither of the rivals has been able to pass a vote of confidence.
United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said Rajapakse needs at least eight more votes in the 225 member assembly to reach the required 113 to win a vote.
“At the moment we have 104 or 105 MPs,” Rambukwella told reporters. He said the Sirisena-Rajapakse group needed “crossover” legislators and expressed hope enough would be secured by the time the assembly meets next week.
Rambukwella’s comments contradicted Sirisena’s announcement on Monday that he had the support of 113 legislators when he sacked Wickremesinghe and his government.

“Do not doubt the 113 MPs. We have completed getting 113 MPs,” Sirisena told a public rally. The Sirisena-Rajapakse camp has insisted since the start of the dispute that it has enough parliament votes.
Wickremesinghe, who maintains that the action against him was unconstitutional and illegal, insists his group can muster a majority.
According to an AFP count, Wickremesinghe and his allies have 120 MPs while Rajapakse and Sirisena have 104. The speaker, the 225th member, is neutral.
Wickremesinghe remains holed up in his official residence, saying his removal would be illegal, while Rajapakse is running a parallel administration from the prime minister’s office.
Sirisena suspended parliament to give himself more time to engineer defections, according to the opposition. Several legislators have said they were offered millions of dollars to defect and at least eight have jumped to Sirisena’s side.
Under pressure from the United Nations, United States and European Union states to allow a parliament vote, Sirisena agreed twice to lift the suspension, but changed his mind.  His latest order calls for parliament to meet on November 14.
The EU said Friday that the crisis had scarred the Indian Ocean island’s international reputation.
– Image damaged –
Amid rumours that Sirisena may seek to delay matters further, the EU, in a joint statement with Norway and Switzerland, said parliament should vote “immediately when reconvened”.
“Any further delay could damage Sri Lanka’s international reputation and deter investors,” the statement said.

Wickremesinghe late Thursday thanked his supporters and urged them not to give up in the showdown.
“In extraordinary numbers and with extraordinary courage you came out on to the streets, you spoke out,” Wickremesinghe said in a video message posted on Facebook.
“You have not let this country be plunged into the darkness of dictatorship. For this inspiring effort, I want to thank everyone who has risen to fight for democracy and justice,” he said.
His supporters staged a noisy cavalcade of motorcycles, auto-rickshaws, cars and vans in the capital Colombo on Thursday.
The power struggle on the island of 21 million people has paralysed much of the administration, according to legislators on both sides of the dispute.
Sirisena has filled only 22 of 30 cabinet positions — purposefully keeping some jobs vacant to tempt legislators of Wickremesinghe’s party to defect.

Tamil Nadu parties slam dissolution of Sri Lanka Parliament
November 11, 2018   12:57 am

-

Tamil Nadu political parties, including the main opposition DMK Saturday termed the dissolution of the Sri Lankan Parliament as “murder of democracy”.
They also sought the Indian government’s intervention to ensure that the security of India and the welfare of the Tamil people in the island nation are protected.
DMK chief M K Stalin said the dissolution of parliament was “trampling of the Constitution” and “atrocious” since the Sri Lankan constitution says that only a resolution by two-thirds of its members can pave the way to dissolve the House within four and a half years of its convening.
The leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu assembly, dubbed the move as a political emergency that threatened stability and jeopardised the welfare of Tamils.
Urging the Indian government to condemn the “murder of democracy”, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader said the Union government must take steps to ensure a dignified life for Tamils with peace and security.
Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) leader Anbumani Ramadoss said although it was Sri Lanka’s internal issue, the Centre cannot overlook the developments as the security of India and the welfare of the Tamil population of the island nation was at stake.
“It is a brutal murder of democracy since Parliament’s tenure ends only in August 2020,” Anbumani, who is also the party’s Dharmapuri Lok Sabha MP, said.
He alleged that the Maithripala Sirisena-Rajapaksa combine would try to win the January 5 polls through intimidatory tactics and by indulging in poll irregularities.
If they succeeded, it would lead to “both anti-Tamil” and “anti-India measures” in Sri Lanka, Anbumani claimed.
“Strategic locations in Sri Lanka may be given on a platter to China, jeopardising India’s security interests,” he alleged.
Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary Vaiko accused Sirisena of executing a “treacherous drama” to hand over full powers to Rajapaksa.
T T V Dhinakaran of Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam too condemned the dissolution of parliament and demanded that the United Nations and the Indian government monitor the situation to ensure that Tamils were not affected in any way.
He said the House was dissolved at a time when Tamils all over the world were expecting annulment of Rajapaksa’s appointment as the prime minister by parliament, an “atrocious act that would root out democracy”.

Now main concern for UNP JVP TNA alliance is that they have to spend bond scam money remaining amount for this election, also they couldnt collect the commissions due to siras 180 deg sudden turn,

Now Ranil Anura Sampa will have to take a loan from USA+EU and repay by again looting central bank after wining the election, if they couldnt win they need to pay from own wealth

These guys are also worried that Arjun will be brought to SL, and he will release the names of UNP JVP TNA memebers who were involved in bond scam

Yahapalanaya what have you got to say about the revelations made by CBK a childhood friend of RW in 2004 about your butterfly leader RW:

Ranil abused and subverted parliamentary democracy
Posted on November 10th, 2018

TIME: What was the immediate reason for calling an election?

President KUMARATUNGA: I was forced into it by a total breakdown of cohabitation in government. The Prime Minister (Ranil Wickremesinghe) was determined to harass me and chase me out. He has only one obsession: he wants to be the President. And he does not seem to care what happens to the country in the process. We came to an impossible impasse. The only way to resolve it was to ask the people for a mandate. —TIME’s Alex Perry at President’s House in Colombo, March 29, 2004

unquote: In my opinion RW & his butterfly gang started harassing MS soon after he appointed the Commission to probe the bond scam. Following that even UNP pups started slandering him with the blessings of RW. There is a limit for anybody's patience. For that matter i admire MS for putting up with all these without doing what he had done now soon after the bond scam was exposed, as people would have appreciated him more than now. Anyway better late than never!

Constitutional Crisis – Samantha Power says targeted sanctions should be on the table

November 10, 2018 (LBO) – Former United States Ambassador to the United Nations and human rights expert Samantha Power has taken an aggressive stance with regards to Sri Lanka’s constitutional crisis. Making several tweets on this issue, Samantha Power has advocated for targeted sanctions on Sri Lanka if constitutional democracy is not upheld.
After the democratic win during the mid term US congressional elections, Power’s voice is likely to become increasing more important. In a democratic Presidential administration, Power would likely be a contender for the United States’ highest ranking cabinet position, Secretary of State.
After the Democratic control of the US congress is officially cemented in January, the chairmanship of the powerful House Foreign Affairs Committee will be a member of the Democratic Party. The Democrats in the committee had recently released a strong statement on what one termed ‘chaos’ in Sri Lanka.
The United States and the EU are Sri Lanka’s largest trading partners and both have released a myriad of statements indicating they are displeased with the recent political turn of events in Sri Lanka. If Sri Lanka’s constitutional democracy is not upheld, it is increasingly likely that the country will suffer significant economic hardship as a result.
