Sri Lanka is expecting domestic maize output to reach 310,497 metric tonnes in the main Maha harvesting season that is getting underway, up 40 percent from 220,425 metric tonnes reported last year the Department of Agriculture said.
Sri Lanka’s maize output was hit by the fall army worm and erratic weather last year.
By January 78 percent of the targeted 99,431 hectares of maize had been cultivated.
Most the maize is expected from the Anuradhapura, Moneragala and Amparai districts.
Sri Lanka’s maize is mainly used for poultry feed and imports are restricted with import duties and licenses.
Maize prices are artificially kept up, pushing up the price of protein poultry and eggs, hurting access to protein to poorer segments of the population.
Restrictions in the import of maize is also hurting the commercial dairy industry.
