As the hospitality industry was struck heavily by the pandemic the prices have dipped significantly .
What is your opinion in longterm investing in this sector .

Since Sri Lanka is highly dependent on the hospitality industry for revenue generation, sooner or later this industry has to pick up. However, since the entire world at the moment is affected by COVID-19, the influx of tourists is greatly hindered. The situation was different last year with regards to the Easter Bombings as it was an internal drawback with the influx of tourists was still possible. The high number of tourists arrivals in December 2019 and Jan 2020 proved we were recovering well.

As someone who was in Tourist/Hospitality industry, I could say the industry would suffer for the next 2 years since travelling patterns are also changing (many countries are now promoting domestic tourism). Also, no matter how many tourists there are who want to travel to Sri Lanka, there should be flight options available at reasonable costs. Given the airlines are also facing difficult times, if the flight connections get less (means available options could be costly), it could directly impact the arrivals.

So, in a nutshell, if the tourism industry can come up with innovative ways to attract tourists in this new norm, there will be uptrend but pre COVID-19 levels cannot be guaranteed - or would take a very long time.
