German investors keen to invest in hotels, polo clubs here
Sri Lanka’s Consul General in Frankfurt Buddhi Athauda yesterday said high profile investors from Germany will arrive in the island end March to look for possible locations to build tourist hotels catering to the high end market and also launch a few Polo Clubs.
The investors who are Chairmen and CEOs of leading German companies, well known international chains and franchises or with international links would initially invest around 10 million Euros, he said.
The locations earmarked for the projects at the moment are Kandy and Nuwara Eliya and on their arrival they will visit the areas recommended by the government for possible investment on tourism projects whichincludes Kalpitiya, Dedduwa, the East Coast, and even the North as the environment is now conducive for such projects, Athauda said.
There is an unprecedented demand for land in the North with the peace dividend and the price of land in the Northern peninsula has skyrocketed .
Athauda said that some of the investors who are on their first visit here are waiting for the opportune moment to start the projects.
"There will be more tourists visiting the country from Europe as there is turmoil in some Middle East countries, particularly in Egypt and we must promote Sri Lanka more vigorously," he said adding that Sri Lanka Tourism and Sri Lankan Airlines are on the right path boosting the tourism product in overseas markets," Athauda pointed out.
Recently Corporate heads of top international companies based in the commercial capital of Germany, Frankfurt, Consul Generals serving a large number of countries including the US, China, India, Japan, VIPs, business entrepreneurs attended a banquet at the Intercontinental hotel in Frankfurt where there were queries about the investment opportunities available in Sri Lanka and showed a lot of interest in either launching joint ventures with Sri Lankan companies or fully investing here , Athauda said.
