“Demand for studying capital market
courses in Sri Lanka is growing” says Professor H. Dissabandara of the
Securities and Exchange Commission.

Dissabandara who is in-charge of the
Capital Market Education and Training arm of the SEC said, this is
evident from the number of students taking part in the courses conducted
by the regulator.

SEC in the year 2008 commenced several
courses starting from Certificate Level running up to Diploma Level to
produce qualified candidates to take up positions in the growing capital
market industry of the country.

Since then, it has produced 350 Capital Market Certificate Holders while at the end of this year that number will go up to 750.

Dissabandara says by the end of July
2011, the SEC will also award certificates for 10 registered Investments
Advisers who have undergone training under a recognized broker.

Apart from those courses, the official
said already 75 students are following Diploma in Capital Market Course
offered by the SEC in collaboration with the London based CISI.

This diploma entails syllabus covering areas such as Corporate Finance, Derivatives and Investment Management.

Professor Dissabandara says, “These courses will help the industry to work with qualified candidates”.

He said the students who undergo capital
market studies can get jobs in Stock Brokering firms, Banks, Unit
Trusts, and Fund Managers etc.

Courses are conducted both in Sinhala and English.
