Aug 26, 2011 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's HVA group, a branded tea exporter, is building a 200 million rupee 'forest garden' resort with eco-friendly chalets near a national park in the island's northwest, an official said.

so this recent run is for this news?? seems that every bugger try to build hotels and resorts. I wonder who will stay their hotels..I do not think that much of tourists come to sri lanka

Galadari,Taj and many other hotels which are operating for last two decades still running at a loss or with a very marginal profit. Only a handfull of hotels are runing with a decent profit. I guess most of the Management like to go for some kind of construction coz they can personaly earn some money during the constuction period by offering tenders , and acquiring funiture and fittings,and purchasing material etc. I am not saying any perticular person or management group is behave like this. But from many such projecs we can see PAT and EPS is very unsatisfactory.In most cases cotinued losses or EPS are in cents. Still they are ready to go for expansion. WHY? Question is that.

Auther, now with around 30-35 % increase of the number of arrivals Y to Y, still occupancy rate has not gone up beyond 60% in the exisiting hotels. That means another 20-30% increase is required to reach around 90% occupancy of the hotels already in business.When all new hotels come to opperation in the near future which are now in the pipeline they willl have to compete each other to attract clients by offering various benefits which will enhance the cost thus reducing the profit. The future of the hotel industry is not that bright to the shareholders .

How many of us were familiar with Heladiv tea brand before it got listed. First they should target internal growth, then to diversify.

They havent established with their core business yet, and diversifying in to leisure. what a strategy!

everyone is trying to enter hotel sector, not a good sign for me. agree with hawk eye, comapnies like hva need to first work on their core business before breaking in other sectors. but maybe its all just marketing.
