Melfort Green Teas to tie up with Coca-Cola USA to produce Lanka special green tea

By Bandula Sirimanna
Sri Lanka’s Melfort Green Teas (Pvt) Ltd is in the process of tying up with a global leader in the beverage industry, the Coca-Cola company USA to produce and market a special type of green tea for the ice tea market in USA.

Tiran Peiris
Melfort Deputy Managing Director/C.E.O, Tiran Peiris told the Business Times, that preliminary arrangements have been made to produce this special quality green tea using a combination of steam and pan fired process.

This will be a major breakthrough for the local tea industry, he said adding that the product offers 28 medicinal benefits to consumers while there is a growing demand for green tea both here and overseas.

He revealed that Coca-Cola USA plans to add Sri Lankan green tea to hundreds of their brands, including soft drinks, fruit juices, sports drinks and other beverages. He added that Melfort Green Teas is the only company in Sri Lanka producing Chinese Green Tea/Japanese Green Tea and Korean Green Tea with special characteristics. Briefing his company’s plans , he revealed that they are going to set up an instant tea/aroma extraction plant. Tea Extraction Plant provide a fine quality of tea.

The process in the tea processing plant includes extraction, separation of waste, evaporation and spray drying, he added. The Melfort and Sanquhar Green Teas, introduced their super quality green tea products to the local market recently for the first time. Initially this product will be available at their head office at Peliyagoda.

He noted that “Melfort Tea has the only green tea processing plant in Sri Lanka which produces green tea by sourcing "estate fresh green leaves" that guarantee freshness and quality at the highest levels”.
