President puts on hold tyre production venture
පසුගියදා අග්‍රාමාත්‍යවරයාගේ ප්‍රධානත්වයෙන් හොරණ ප්‍රදේශයේදී ඉදිකිරීමේ කටයුතු සඳහා මුල්ගල තැබුණූ හොරණ ටයර් කම්හලේ ඉදිකිරීම් කටයුතු තාවකාලිකව අත්හිටුවීමට ජනාධිපති මෛත්‍රිපාල සිරිසේන මහතා අමාත්‍ය මණ්‌ඩලයට උපදෙස්‌ දී ඇතැයි වාර්තාවේ.
එම කර්මාන්තශාලාවට ඉඩම් පැවරීමේ ක්‍රියාවලිය සහ ඊට ලබාදුන් සහන ගැන මතුව ඇති ඇතැම් ප්‍රශ්න හේතුවෙන් එම ඉදිකිරීම් කටයුතු අත්හිටුවීමට ජනාධිපතිවරයා උපදෙස්‌ දී ඇතැයි දැනගන්නට ඇත.
අගමැති වරයා ලංකාවට පැමිණී පසු මේ ගැන වැඩි දුරට සාකච්ඡා කරනු ඇත.
President Maithripala Sirisena has directed cabinet of ministers to put on hold Radial Tyre plant project at Wagawatte, Horana until the return of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. President Sirisena has intervened in the wake of Italian giant Marangoni denying investing US$ 75 million (Rs 11 billion) in a proposed Tyre manufacturing plant under the Board of Investment (BOI) and distancing itself from the project.
According to the BOI, the 11 billion LKR investment was to be made within four years and the new enterprise granted a range of concessions in line with recommendations made by Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade Malik Samarawickrema.
Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake, has recommended an eight year tax holiday.
Sources said that the BOI had received an application on March 28, 2016 to set up the operation on the basis 60 per cent of its output for export market and the rest to be sold here. The investor has received 100 acre land within Wagawatte Industrial Zone on a 99 year lease under controversial circumstances
