Anura Lokuhetty, President of the Tourist Hotels Association says that the year 2011 was a wonderful year for tourism in Sri Lanka which surpassed the targets set for the year and the foreign exchange revenue recorded a 50% increase compared to the revenue earned in the year 2010. He says that this year’s tourist arrivals will exceed one million. He states that Western are predominant markets for the country while arrivals from other markets are also improving. He points out that China has become a big outbound market and proper marketing should be done in such countries to increase arrivals from those countries.
Mr. Lokuhetty says that Western and Eastern Europe is bread and butter of Sri Lanka’s tourism and this position should be preserved and attention should be further focused in developing these markets. He says that many of the hotels in the country are under refurbishment now and 800 to 900 rooms will become available this year upon completion of refurbishment and says that additional 500 rooms should be made available this year.
The President of the Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators Nilmin Nanayakkara says that the Association has planned to participate in many Trade Fairs globally to promote Sri Lanka tourism. He also states that China is a very large catchment area and the destination itself is fast growing for outbound holidays, and emphasizes that the tourist industry should employ more personnel who could speak the Chinese language to tap a major share of this market. He says that attention should be focused to tap the fast growing markets while consolidating the traditional markets. He also emphasizes that attention should be focused to hold MICE programmes, Meetings and Conferences in the low seasons which are May-June and October-November
