As per latest production data released by the Sri Lanka Tea Board, crop in May has declined by 2.8 million kilos to 30.8 million kilos over a year earlier.
“During May, 2012, all three elevation categories have recorded lower crops than the corresponding month last year, with the harvests from the High Grown elevation in particular showing a fairly large negative variance,” Lanka Commodity Brokers said.
“During the month under review, the weather conditions were once again not conducive for growth, and the worst affected were the plantations in the High Grown area, and Low Growns to a lesser extent, it added.
The steepest decline of 1.6 million kilos has been reported from the High Grown sector, which is followed by Low Growns with a deficit of 751,253 kilos and 418,452 kilos by Medium Grown teas.
During the period Jan/May 2012, the national Tea Crop is recorded as 135.6 million kilos which shows a drop of 6.3 million kilos (4.5%) year-on-year. Here again the sharpest drop of 5.4 million kilos (14.5%) is from the High Grown plantations following drought conditions that prevailed during the major period of the current year’s first five months.
“The overall crop for Jan / May, 2012, has now widened to a negative variance of 6.3 million kilos when compared to the corresponding period last year, out of which the High Grown deficit accounts for 5.4 million kilos,” Lanka Commodity Brokers added.

June 20, 2012 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's tea production fell 8.4 percent to 30.8 million kilograms in May 2012 from a year earlier, the state tea promotion office said as the country was hit by dry weather.

High grown tea fell to 7.36 million kilos from 9.0 kilos, mediums fell to 5.58 million kilos from 6.0 million and low growns fell to 17.8 million kilos from 18.6 million in May, from a year earlier.

In the first five months of the year total production fell 3.7 percent to 135 million kilos of tea.

Sri Lanka has produced 125.2 million kilos of orthodox tea (down from 129.2 million kilos), 9.1 million kilos of CTC (crush-tear-curl) tea (down from 10.2 million kilos) and 1.28 million kilos of green tea (down from 1.38 million), up to May 2012.

Sri Lanka’s tea production reduced by 8.4% in the month of May to 30.81 million kg compared with 33.65 million kg in the same month a year ago, data released by the Sri Lanka Tea Board today showed. This was the fourth straight month of lower output, which analysts say was mainly due to the lower rainfall experienced in the estates.

Meanwhile, production in the first five months has dropped 3.8 percent to 135.63 million kg from 140.92 million compared with the same period in 2011.

High grown tea output, which accounts for about a fourth of production, fell as much as 18.4 percent in May amounting for 59 percent of the total fall.

The tea board expects 330 million kg output for the full year, slightly higher than last year’s 328.37 million kg, and sees 2012 export revenue at a record high, surpassing last year’s $1.5 billion, due to higher prices. Tea output hit a record 331.43 million kg in 2010. Revenue from the island nation’s top agricultural export commodity fell 11.7 percent to $421.1 million in the first four months of 2012 compared with the previous year, Central Bank data showed.
