Mar 17, 2011 (LBO) - Sri Lankan bank customers have been warned by the Information and Communications Technology Agency to be wary of financial fraud by hackers using fake websites of the branches of foreign banks in the island.
The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Response Team (SLCERT) of the ICT Agency said it has got complaints that customers were getting emails asking for details like passwords which are then used to commit fraud.
The fraudsters are targeting bank customers who do internet banking and have set up fake websites that look like those of the branches of international banks in Sri Lanka, a statement from SLCERT said.
The emails mislead bank clients by informing them the bank has decided to change names and password of accounts holders to enhance their security and ask customers to send their details to the false website from where the data is stolen to commit fraud.
SLCERT said customers can identify genuine websites by the appearance of 'https' in the address bar and the symbol of a padlock in the bottom right hand corner.
It said customers are advised to be wary of emails asking for details of their accounts and to check with their banks before responding.
SLCERT is a semi-government entity that protects information and information systems within the state sector and extends its services to the private sector and general public.
Its services range from responding to and investigating information security breaches, to preventing security breaches by way of awareness creation, security assessments and security capability building.
