Aug 17, 2012 (LBT) - The market ended the week on a mildly positive note with the ASPI closing at 4927 while the MPI also edged up higher to close at 4550(+0.6%). Turnover inched up to LKR217 mn with trading in Commercial Bank(X), Ascot Holdings and Commercial Bank collectively accounting for 42% of the day’s total. Gainers marginally outpaced losers with SMB Leasing(X), SMB Leasing and Vallibel Finance rising by 33.3%, 11.1% and 10.2% and offsetting losses in Paragon Ceylon, Renuka Holdings(X) and Hayleys Exports which declined by 38.2%, 15.7% and 10.4% respectively. Meanwhile, global markets ended modestly higher for the week and the euro enjoyed strong support today as spirits were lifted by comments from German Chancellor Angela Merkel reasserting her desire to save the eurozone.

Net foreign purchases at all time high While net foreign buying is currently at an all time high at LKR27 bn, it is discouraging to note that domestic investor sentiment still appears to remain largely sluggish. Consequently, we re-iterate the need for domestic investors to adopt a medium to longer term investment horizon and focus on stocks with the following key attributes in order to generate positive returns on a largely sustainable basis.

Sizeable market share and firm top-line growth, Excess cash-flow and modest debt levels, Consistent earnings growth, Quality management, Long-term competitive advantage and economies of scale, High sustainable return on capital employed, Attractive valuations – absolute and relative.
