State-run SriLankan Airlines said it will operate nine flights a week out of Sri Lanka's second international airport in Mattala, which is opening next week while its sister budget carrier will operate two flights.

SriLankan Airlines will fly twice a week to Riyadh, four times to Male, twice to Beijing and once to Shanghai via Bangkok. Mihin Lanka will operate twice a week to Bodh Gaya.

The Chinese financed Mahinda Rajapaksa International Airport will open on March 18.

"SriLankan's role in MRIA is sure to expand with the arrival of more airlines and the increase of passenger flow," SriLankan Airlines’ Chairman, Nishantha Wickramasinghe said in a statement.

SriLankan will also have catering and ground handling monopolies at the airport.

Employment at the airport had been restricted to the Hambantota district including 52 for catering, but experienced staff from other parts of the country who worked in the Katunayake airport will at the Mattala for one year, the statement said.

"Taking a step ahead, Sri Lankan Airlines has recruited and will continue to recruit and train the youth from rural areas surrounding Mattala thereby encouraging them to take on lucrative careers in aviation," said SriLankan Airlines’ chief executive Kapila Chandrasena said.

SriLankan Cargo will manage the airport's 5,000-square meter cargo facility.

The Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) commenced its scheduled flight arrivals and departures on Friday morning, four days after it officially opened on March 18.

The new airport had to go through a thorough clean-up prior to commencing operations after the opening day’s ceremony that took place amidst much celebration.

MRIA Airport Manager H.S. Hettiarachchi told the Business Times that a fair number of passengers are checking-in and out from the newly -constructed airport.

He observed that about 20 passengers arrived at Mattala on the Air Arabia flight on Friday, and at least 76 passengers left on the flight back to Sharjah. In a separate statement, Air Arabia said it is operating two weekly flights between Sharjah and Mattala.

The passengers were said to be a mix of both local and foreigners visiting the country for those arriving and departing from the Mattala airport, the airport manager said. Mr. Hettiarachchi noted that “all essential agencies are functioning” at the airport and that from March 22 early morning there were flights scheduled to touch down and take-off from the southern airport.

Commenting on possibilities for passengers to commute to Colombo, he explained that the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) had commenced a special transport service from Mattala to Colombo and there were three taxi service operators functioning from the new airport.

Flights arriving at the Mattala airport would touch down, stay for a duration of at least 20 minutes before they turnaround unless they require refuelling, he said. Currently, the airport is said to have adequate fuel stock brought in from Colombo as required for those flights landing at the airport, Mr. Hettiarachchi said.
In future, Mr. Hettiarachchi said there would be daily flights operating to and from Mattala depending on the day of the week, and a new flight schedule is expected to be released soon

I think they should change this from

SriLankan UL114 – ETA 1300/ETD 1400 (Male-HRI–Colombo)
March 26:
-SriLankan UL 119 -ETA 1210/ETD 1310 (Colombo-HRI-Male)

-SriLankan UL 898 – ETA 1255/ETD 1355 (Colombo—HRI -Bangkok -Beijing)
-SriLankan UL 899 -ETA 1215/ETD 1315 (Beijing-Bangkok-HRI–Colombo)

To

SriLankan UL114 – ETA 1300/ETD 1400 (Male-Colombo-HRI)
March 26:
-SriLankan UL 119 -ETA 1210/ETD 1310 (HRI-Colombo-Male)

-SriLankan UL 898 – ETA 1255/ETD 1355 (HRI-Colombo -Bangkok -Beijing)
-SriLankan UL 899 -ETA 1215/ETD 1315 (Beijing-Bangkok-Colombo-HRI)

With the current schedule they have to takeoff two times with major part of weight ( passenger , luggage and fuel) from Colombo and again from Mattala.

If they start from mattla they can fly with less fuel and less cargo to Colombo, get heavy load of Colombo and then fly long distance.

Inbound also same.
If land first at Mattala they have to takeoff with the load again to Colombo.
--
They have to station maintenance crews in mattala.

Anybody ever thought this.

Would it not have been more noble to have named something DH Rajapaksa instead of the personal name. Specially something in the Hambanthota region .

What I guessed has happened within 2 days !

Those fools who prepared the flight schedules for Mattala are the traitors of the nation.

Yesterday UL 273 flying from Colombo to Riyadh took off from Katunayaka with the full load of passengers and their baggage, has to land at Mattale due to the stupid flight plan prepared by the No1 fool, I do not know who is that idiot.

Then it has to refuel in full to take the long journey to Riyadh. Only then the mattala or mottala at Mattala found the fuel in the bowser was not enough and the other bowser has not yet arrived at Mattala.

So they waited one and half hours until they get full load of fuel.

A person who got into the plane at 11.30 in BIA was still in Sri Lanka at 2 p.m. starving in Rajapaksa Internatinal Air port.
For normal 3 and 1/2 hr trip now they give the taste of the paradise for 6 jolly good hours !

Those brainless officers of Sri lankan / AA could not see this before when they arrange the flight like :
UL 273 -ETA 1235/ETD 1325 (Colombo-HRI-Riyadh)

If they make the simple change like :
UL 273 -ETA 1235/ETD 1325 (HRI-Colombo-Riyadh)
this problem will not arise.

If they start these 2-3 routes from Mattala , they have to take less fuel to mattala by road. Aircraft burn less fuel with 1 or 2 passengers from mattala to katunayaka.
Enough fuel transported by rail is available at katunayaka.

They have to place maintenance team for 1 or 2 planes at Mattala to start the flights from there.

http://www.dailymirror.lk/news/27180-plane-delayed-at-mattala.html

Note: Still there are direct flights from katunayaka. If they do not change this schedule please warn everybody to select flights avoiding Mattala.

What is the real need for the UL flight to touch down at Mattala with a full load? Can;t they go directly from BIA to Riyadh?

Is this just to get more traffic at Mattala?
