Sri Lanka Cement Corporation is moving towards reopening of the Kankesanthurai Cement Factory which was damaged during the civil war.
The state-owned Sri Lanka Cement Corporation controls the defunct Kankesanthurai Cement Works in Jaffna, once a major force in the economy of the north and has been the object of repeated proposals for revival.
Speaking to the Ceylon Daily News, State Resources and Enterprise Development Minister Dayasritha Tissera said: “The government has decided to develop the Kankesanthurai Cement Factory and establish a new cement factory to provide quality cement to the public at a reasonable price.”
During the re-launching programme, the minister said Sri Lanka Cement Corporation and Lanka Cement Company decided to import cement from Pakistan and issue it to the local market under the brand names of Lanka Cement and Kankesan Cement. “They will be issued to the market at a low price than the standard price in the market,” he said.
