Many people misunderstood the results
You have to see why NTB is having good results while COMB IS NOT
because, there is no issue in core - domestic banking, but there is an issue in dealing books & FCBU that is very small in NTB compared to its domestic business
This is special quarter, not indicator f future
If you misunderstood this as better performance of NTB, compared to HNB,COMB, you make a misjudgment

why do you keep posting the same thing in many posts. here's what I think,
1. Banks should have sound trading policies/ risk measurements in place.
2. The exchange rate has not shown much volatility in the present quarter( with the range of LKR/$129-127.5) and the banks could have avoided trading losses/ if any.
3. One should not make decisions based only on quarterly financial statements/as it would be misleading.

NTB has shown growth in its core operating activities, which should be noted, on voting shares of the banking sector NTB is the cheapest on PE based both trailing and leading.

It is obvious we cannot compare NTB with HNB/COMB/NDB due to the sheer size the Banks. and NTB does not compete with HNB or COMB. Its on another level of MID sized Banks such as PABC or UBC. On this scale NTB is very much attractive based on the valuations.
P.s. I am long on NTB.

PE is a misleading indicator for bank valuation
What's critical for bank this year : movement of interest rates - Big banks will have better gains through trading of treasury bonds as their books are larger

Yes NTB has done well in core banking. You should notice that other banks also has done well in the same segment
NTB's notable results is not purely , they being smarter than rest of the banks, simply because they were not large enough in that segment

This is a short term problem for big banks. Yes.

It has also effected NTB. SEYB the info is not that clear from the little I looked.

But we don't need to compare big banks with much smaller NTB .

NTB in it own league. But even having a trading difference of Rs 160 mil ( a loss of 80 million from +80 million last year) it has shown growth.

PE, PBV are a relative valuation methods which can be used for any company in any industry, purely to have a comparison among peers to evaluate whether the entity is under or over valued relativelty.

Agreed it should not be used as the only valuation method. Other absolute valuation methods should be used to value the intrinsic value of the company.

i am confused regarding SDB Quarterly report, is it for the Quarter or for the year??

The heading says Qtr report but at the end result says profit for the year, and EPS also for the year.
I am not sure whether I have missed something..

For comparison purpose, can we group the banks into several baskets ( A, B, C..etc) by considering certain factors such as market capitalization, trading volume or core business activities? May be someone has got such a worksheet.
