Stock market indices slumped by almost 1.0% today due to weakening investor confidence mainly on overall economic conditions. After the Touchwood Investment’s official announcement regarding the petition filed by its client, SEC today directed CSE to suspend trading of TWOD with immediate effect for three market days. According to the direction issued by SEC, the commission has decided to commence a fully fledge investigation in to the business affairs of Touchwood Investments. By the time of trading suspension TWOD traded at LKR 1.30, down by 13%.

Further, Central Investment & Finance also made a disclosure to the CSE concerning depositors’ complaints on dishonored cheques and company’s inability to pay back the customer deposits. However the company stated that company lawyers have informed the court about the inability of the company to make these payments due to the current restructuring program. CIFL closed LKR 0.40, down by 20%.

Benchmark ASI lost 57.90 index points (-1.01%) to end at 5,686.99 and S&P SL 20 Index lost 32.84 points (-1.02%) to end at 3,178.12. price depreciations in Ceylinco Insurance by 10.8%, John Keells Holdings by 1.4% (closed at LKR 210.00) and Chevron Lubricants by 3.4% (closed at LKR 256.10) contributed negatively to the market performances.

Daily market turnover was LKR 486mn. With the support of several crossings John Keells Holdings topped the turnover list with LKR 264mn followed by Commercial Bank with LKR 41mn and Watawala Plantations with LKR 35mn. Accordingly ~0.4mn shares of John Keells Holdings at a price range of LKR 210.00-213.00 per share, ~2.5mn shares of Watawala Plantations at a price of LKR 14.00 per share and ~0.3mn shares of Commercial Bank at a price of LKR 114.70 per share changed hands during the day.

John Keells Holdings, Hemas Holdings and Panasian Power were the heavily traded stocks during the day. Hemas Holdings today announced that the company has finalized the plan to construct & operate USD 40mn worth of luxury five star resort in Tangalle together with Minor Hotel Group, Thailand and the construction will begin immediately. The proposed resort scheduled to open in early 2015. Hemas Holdings closed at LKR 31.00, up by 7.6%.

Foreign participation for the day was 45% whilst net outflow of LKR 67mn.

Cash map closed at 27%.
