Colombo Stock market closed higher on Thursday with positive returns in both indices. ASI gained 47.42 points (+0.80%) to close at 5,957.37 while S&P SL 20 Index ended at 3,286.91, up by 31.92 points (+0.98%). Price appreciations in large cap stocks such as Ceylon Tobacco by 2.8% to close at LKR 1,180.00, Carsons by 2.6% to close at LKR 400.00 and Asian Hotels & Properties by 5.5% to close at LKR 75.00 contributed positively to the index performances.

Market turnover was LKR 575mn. Hatton National Bank emerged as the top contributor to the turnover (LKR 90mn) closely followed by John Keells Holdings (LKR 78mn) and Touchwood Investments (LKR 47mn). Two negotiated deals were recorded in Hatton National Bank and John Keells Holdings where 0.6mn shares and 0.32mn shares changed hands at a price of LKR 150.00 and LKR 217.00 respectively.

Active trading by retail investors boosted the prices of several penny stocks such as Swarnamahal Financial Services (up by 16% to close at LKR 2.90), Browns Investments (up by 12% to close at LKR 2.80), The Finance non-voting (up by 30% to close at LKR 4.30), The Finance - voting (up by 18% to close at LKR 11.00) and Muller & Phipps (up by 14% to close at LKR 1.60).

Foreign participation for the day was 25%. Net foreign inflow was LKR 166mn.

Cash map closed at 47%.

COLOMBO, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Sri Lankan stocks rose to their seven-week closing highs on Thursday, led by large caps such as Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC and foreign inflows into the island nation's risk assets.

The main share index rose 0.8 percent, or 47.42 points, to 5,957.37, its highest close since Aug. 22.

Foreign investors were net buyers of 165.7 million rupees ($1.26 million) worth of shares, extending the net buying so far this year to 21.24 billion rupees.

Shares in market heavyweight Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC rose 2.86 percent to 1,180.40 rupees.

The day's turnover was 575.1 million rupees, well below this year's daily average of about 871 million rupees.
