Equity market closed its operations for the week with notable gains. All share price index advanced by 28.17 (+0.48%) to end at 5,876.66 and S&P SL 20 index advanced by 16.20 (+0.50%) to end at 3,239.32. Price appreciations in blue-chip counters such as John Keells Holdings (closed at LKR 225.20, +2.36%), Nestle (closed at LKR 2,131.00, +1%) and Ceylon Theatres (closed at LKR 148.00, +5.11%).

Daily market turnover was LKR 1.3 billion. Ceylon Tea Services (LKR 999mn) positioned as the top contributor with the support of negotiated deals. 0.8mn shares of Ceylon Tea Services were sold by one of the top three shareholders in two crossings at a price of LKR 680.0 per share and consequently Ceylon Tea Services accounted for 77% of the total market turnover. Ceylon Tea Services closed at LKR 680.00, up by 1.4%.

Hatton National Bank (LKR 100mn) with a crossing of 0.70mn shares at LKR 143.30 made the second highest contribution to the market turnover followed by John Keells Holdings (LKR 83mn). Total crossings were accounted to 48% of the total market turnover.

Moreover, John Keells Holdings, John Keells Holdings W0022 (2015) and W0023 (2016) attracted heavy investor interest during the day.

Foreign participation was 9% of the market activity, where foreign investors were net buyers with a net foreign inflow of LKR 14mn. Net foreign inflows were mainly seen in counters such as Kahawatta plantations (LKR 14mn), National Development Bank (LKR 1.6mn) and Commercial Bank (LKR 1.5mn).

Further, Lanka IOC (closed at LKR 33.40, +1.52%) and John Keells Holdings W0023 (closed at LKR 90.00, +8.17%) reached 52wk high price levels during the session whilst seven stocks touched 52wk low price levels.

Cash map closed at 64%.

Dec 27, 2013 (LBT) - Indices denote gains: Indices depicted a positive momentum during the day as the ASPI denoted a gradual climb to close with a gain of 28 points at 5,876.66. Gains recorded in index heavy counters; John Keells Holdings (+2.3%), CT Holdings (+5.1%), Nestle Lanka (+1.0%) and Lion Brewery (+2.3%) positively weighed on the index. Consequently the S&P SL20 index closed up 17 points at 3,240.63.

CTEA spearheaded the turnover: Turnover level crossed the LKR1.3 bn mark, the highest since 08.11.2013 followed by a crossing in Ceylon Tea Services which carried two blocks accumulating to 800k shares at LKR680.0. Renewed interest led the counter to spearhead the day’s turnover as several on-board blocks were transacted at a similar price before closing with a gain of 1.4% at LKR680.0. Hatton National Bank added a block of 699k shares to the crossings board at LKR143.3.

Diversified sector gathered interest: Interest emerged in the diversified players with John Keells Holdings taking the lead. Richard Peiris Company, and Expo Lanka Holdings gathered some interest as the former saw an on-board block of c.1.2 mn shares being transacted at LKR6.3. Renewed interest was seen in Kahawatte Plantations backed by a block of 349k shares at LKR38.9 which led the counter to the top turnover slot. BFI sector play was centered on Sampath Bank and Central Finance.

Retail activity on a sluggish path: Retailers remained on the sidelines with activity surrounding selected counters; Multi Finance Company, John Keells Holdings and Warrants, Nation Lanka Finance and PC House. Lanka IOC also gathered some interest as it touched a new 52-week high level at LKR34.4.
