Small investors in Sri Lanka were at a disadvantage due to limited investment opportunities. With the introduction of the free economy and privatisation of state ventures Colombo Stock Exchange was started. With so many IPO's being launched investors could buy into big companies at low prices. However the stock market grew at a low pace due to high interest rates prevailing in the market. Investors could get up to a 25% return just by investing in Finance Companies.
The collapse of some Finance companies made investors weary of not only the fly by night Finance Companies but also of sound ones. Most investors split their investments in banks and stock market. Then there was a boom in the stock market with the entry of the financial rogues who took the genuine investors on a ride. The collapse of the market initiated by the politicians giving bad publicity and regulators introducing untimely market regulations left the small time investors high and dry and not trusting the stock market.
Today, with the introduction of a low interest regime the investors stood to lose their money value if they stayed with the financial institutions due to actual inflation being higher than interest gain. Most of the reputed companies are faring well which turned the small investors back to stock market. With high eps most of the shares available have become a good investment. Most of the stable and sound companies which have reached 52 week high are still lower than the all time high. However the financial performance of these companies being very much better than when their shares were at all time high could result them reaching and exceeding those levels in the near future. Another reason for these companies to be a good investment is that they have been retaining profits.
My personal feeling is that today stock market has become an alternative investment opportunity which is a relief. However I do not advise any investor to get into the market blindly
