Agree. You cannot monitor the whole market always. So focus only on 10 to 15 shares. And monitor those selected shares continuously.

That may be what you should do for short term trading.

70% of my portfolio value is now generated by 12-15 stocks. Non of them are speculative or overpriced shares pushed by organized gangs.

Most of the rest is spread over 25 selected stocks in different sectors ; medium to long term targets.

There is another set with over 50-60 companies, few 100s each, hardly monitored or trade them due to the fact you mentioned. Some are residuals of former favorites. But, sometimes they produce me some buks without much effort when I sell them during a rally.

it also depends on the amount invested. you cannot diversify so much with a small investment.

even with the small amount I have, I've diversified in around 40 companies but 50% of it is in some 5-6 companies which I don't trade frequently.

If u are very rich then u can invest on large number of companies as u have enough money to average. If u are a retail invester then better to invest on a few companies otherwise u might be end up in a mess.

Actually I am a person who bought SAMP @ 8/- in 1980s.

Those days, we had to have shares of a company to receive its reports (by post). There were no Internet, email, sms, mobiles etc. No other way to learn about performances of the companies except reading Dailynews' business page.
No sites like this, no much friends investing in CSE. , no computers, just using our brain , memory , note books to keep records and used 1mm graph sheets in walls of my room to plot movements and trends.

If you were not in the shareholder list it was very difficult to get enough info of a company.

Hence we are used to it, to meddle with many numbers. Not that much rich :-)

@ Meta Trader,

Its OK . I just explained my story. What you have said is correct for personal portfolio management.

Actually most of my low quantity shares in 50-60 batch are zero cost holdings.

If I buy 1000 @ 10 (= 10,000+ broker%) and able to sell it at a higher price, usually I sell 900 (say @ 14 x 900 = 12,600) to recover the costs and get some profit. The balance 100 is kept without much attention , sometimes years. It is at zero cost for me as I have recover the total investment, may give some income later with splits, rights + chance to get additional rights etc . ( apart from getting reports during early days)

Only trouble is getting many dividend notes for few rupees, rarely deposit them.

Same here. My dad is a master of this strategy .Some may say he is a Market junkie but with this method he earned a extra ordinary gains and opportunities in the last decade .he is still holding some of the bonus share issues,Converted Rights of more than 30 companies and some of the ipo issues such as #CTCE #SAMP #SYEB etc.

even though my pf is small, when I sell, usually i keep a 100 (unless it is a very high priced share) just to follow it

Yes friends. I hope when we disclose these things others can learn that there are many ways to improve your wealth, not only just buying and selling or running after rallies.

@slstock, zero cost club :-)
