Feb 15, Colombo: Sri Lanka's steel suppliers Sunday took to the streets to protest the removal of a tax imposed on imported raw material saying the measure hurts the local industry. Madampe demonstrators say ‘concessions’ threatening to melt iron industry (Watch video)
Sri Lanka News - Newsfirst | News1st | newsfirst.lk | Breaking / Melanie Santiago / 3 hours ago

The National Iron Suppliers Association staged a demonstration in Madampe on Sunday.

The protesters claim that close to one million Sri Lankans in the iron industry, will lose their jobs as a result of tax concessions being granted for the importation of raw materials used in iron manufacturing.

The iron suppliers who converged on the Madampe town claim that for twelve years, they have supplied raw materials to seven companies which purchase iron to manufacture rods.

The price of raw materials has now suddenly decreased.

The suppliers say that this situation affects close to one million people who collect scrap metal for their livelihoods.

The demonstrators then staged a protest blocking the railway line close to the Madampe town.

Our camera also captured the manner in which one of the youth participating in the demonstration, attempted to board a train. Our reporter said that train services between Chilaw and Colombo were delayed by about half an hour as a result of the demonstration.
